Move over Wii Sports – here comes Mocap Sports

While it might  seem that Konami is a little late to the motion controller party, you also might recall that Konami pioneered the motion controller prior to the release of the Nintendo Wii (which has since taken credit for pioneering motion sensing in the minds of many people, which of course is false anyways in part due to both Konami’s Mocap games and a joystick Microsoft did called the Sidewinder). Those motion controlled arcade games were dubbed “MoCap” by Konami and several Mocap games were released in the earlier part of this decade with some games gaining a fan following (such as with Mocap Boxing). Konami has decided to bring it’s Mocap line back, probably due to the popularity of the Wii and their first game to do this actually makes a reference to Nintendo’s  mega-popular pack-in game Wii Sports with the title of this arcade being “Mocap Sports”. At the moment the game is being tested with only one game, baseball and it is a two player game. The controllers have a button and an analog stick on them to enhance the possiblities of what can be done but it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer to see what that is. I can imagine that this could be quite popular if it has more than baseball on it, in part due to the fact that it will have better graphics than what the Wii can do, real online support and hopefully more games.

Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom running on Wii-based hardware?

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

I was a little surprised when I heard that the home version of Tatsunoko VS. Capcom was announced just for the Wii – I figured that it would have come to something else as well. Perhaps the fact that SFIV is coming to everything on planet earth except for the Wii made them go this route, I’m not sure. But then we have something else pop up here that could indicate why it’s coming to the Wii – supposedly the game is running on Wii-based hardware. At the moment there are two sources which are suggesting this – one a Japanese site Sakura.jp and an English site, Magic Box. If this is the case then we have to wonder who has developed the new board – when I talked with Namco back in March they were indicating that they were looking into creating something based on the Wii but we haven’t heard anything about it since. We’ll keep you posted of course but if this holds true then only the Xbox 360 will be the only console not to be modified for arcade use (legally) in this generation.

UPDATE: Thanks to Chris from Magic Box, they gave me another source where this info is coming from, it’s known to be reliable as well. Link to 3rd source.

BTW- Just to clarify what I said about Namco above – it’s common for one company to create new hardware and then pass it around for others to use, the best modern case is the Taito Type X which is being used by many different companies for games. So where Namco had suggested that they were looking into creating an arcade platform based on the Wii, it seems logical to me that there could be a connection here and if so, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom will be the first game that we know of to use this hardware.

I don’t know what it is about box art, but it always gets me more excited about a game. Especially when it has zombies on it!

Wii Arcade Stick

For all those negative people out there that claim the arcade is dead, maybe they should keep in mind that every games consoles that comes out, ends up with an “arcade stick” peripheral, still the finest controller known to man (I’m not biased, honest). The latest being the Nintendo Wii. With all those great VC games, as well as stuff like Metal Slug and the new Soul Calibur coming soon, this will make a perfect addition to the wildly popular Wii.
