Ideas for TRON arcade games in modern times

July 15, 2010

I’ve not made it a secret that I am very excited for the upcoming Disney movie TRON Legacy. Even though the original was not a perfect film, it has always been a favorite of mine and it implanted in my head the idea of being an arcade operator one day. Back when the original movie came out, arcade popularity was still riding a high and movie trivia suggests that the arcade game TRON which was based upon the movie actually grossed more than the movie itself (I believe that is the case as I’ve heard that elsewhere although IMDB’s trivia isn’t perfect as also under TRON they claim that 3D game engines would have been invented in 1994 when in fact the arcade title I, Robot from 1983 had a 3D polygon engine). It’s not clear if the arcade game Discs of Tron is added into that or not. The popularity of arcades was also prevalent throughout the entire film, from Flynn’s arcade to stuff in the virtual world being based upon arcade concepts.

With TRON Legacy we have seen some nods to arcade culture although as times have changed we see less arcade influence at work here. They are working on console title  called TRON: Evolution which ties into the movie and there is the online Space Paranoids game which was launched as a browser game recently.  We did see a Space Paranoids arcade machine at Comic Con 2009 but that’s far from an official announcement. As a big arcade fan and a big TRON fan, I think it’s only proper to take a look at what some arcade games may look like or play if they were based upon TRON Legacy so I have taken it upon myself to dream up some concepts. This is just for fun,(so nothing here is sponsored or endorsed by Disney, Disney Interactive or anyone else involved in the films) although I obviously would love to see these ideas or something similar to them come to fruition one day. Flynn’s Arcade Returning to Comic-Con next week

July 13, 2010

Last year the TRON Legacy viral marketing campaign started off with a bang as they recreated (to an extent) the arcade from the movie TRON, Flynn’s Arcade, at Comic-Con 2009. In addition to a number of classic games being on hand for show attendees to revisit, they also featured Space Paranoids in an arcade cabinet. They also had a “secret passageway” which opened up to show off some concept art from the upcoming movie and a life-sized model of the new light-cycles from TRON Legacy.

Comic Con 2010 starts next week and once again, the TL viral marketing campaign has revealed that Flynn’s Arcade will be making a triumphant return to the show, with it open from the 22nd to the 24th. I imagine that Space Paranoids arcade will return but I also if they could unveil another arcade-related surprise. For example, another TRON related flash game has appeared on the internet, on the “ENCOM Japan” website called Circuit Cycles.  Seems to me that a light-cycle arcade game (imagine using a light-cycle replica you could sit on as a controller) would be a perfect fit for arcades. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for more TRON Legacy arcade goodness next week.

TRON Legacy viral campaign continues the arcade love with new Encom Arcade Postcards

July 1, 2010

There is one movie coming out this year which is giving arcades plenty of attention and that is TRON Legacy. While it has been a little while since the last bit of viral marketing took place (with a live event unveiling Space Paranoids Online), a part of the campaign has taken place with a few lucky people getting their hands on these Encom Arcade postcards. I like the element that should be on all arcade flyers or posters  – “Now playing at your local arcade”. All of the postcards include some special codes on the back which are supposed to reveal something that is part of the campaign but I have not read about anyone cracking this particular code quite yet.

These games are all part of the TRON universe of course – in reality no such games exist but as this viral campaign continues I find myself with the continual hope that some sort of real arcade project comes out of it. I know it’s unlikely but you never know. In fact I have been designing a few TRON related arcade games and cabinets, just doodling out some thoughts in my little spare time that I plan on making a post out of here soon, looking at the kind of modern arcade games they could do using the TRON universe.

As for the fake games you see above, what real games do you think they best compare to? Astro Gunner and KrazBot look like clones of Asteroids and Tempest respectively. Not sure about Arc Wars and Vice Squad reminds me of Atari’s Cops N’ Robbers, A.P.B. and Midway’s Spy Hunter. Maybe they will be creating online versions of these titles as well, assuming that Space Paranoids Online has done well.

We should be hearing a lot more about TRON Legacy at Comic-Con next month.

UPDATE: I received a Kraz-Bot card in the mail yesterday, obviously if you got one of those Encom badges or have signed up on Flynn Lives with a mailing address then you should be getting one around now.

Space Paranoids now playable

May 6, 2010

The arcade game that never was really an arcade game is finally playable, as “Encom” releases Space Paranoids Online. If you are unfamiliar with Space Paranoids then there is another reason to pull out the 1982 cult classic TRON. If you are familiar with it, then it’s been a long time coming to this point although admittedly the game works differently than what we saw in the movie. As a “purist” I would have loved to have seen a spruced up version of this available as a proper arcade machine one could purchase. Still, it’s a cool little game and I’m happy that they did this as part of the viral marketing campaign for TRON Legacy which comes out later this year. They did have this setup at Comic-Con last year, I would still love to find out who has those cabs, unless they were destroyed after the show.

Anyways, here is the link to Space Paranoids Online

Also in some TRON related news, I was sent a link to a Tron Tribute soundtrack featuring 8-bit style music you can download for free by 8-bit Weapons. There is that which is perfect for a game room along with another recent Tron tribute soundtrack done by Shiryu, which can also be downloaded for free.

The obligatory TRON Legacy trailer post

March 10, 2010

Obligatory as I have been pointing out the arcade related stuff that has been leaked recently from the upcoming movie. As you can see, Flynn’s isn’t the movie for very long although it wasn’t in the original movie for very long either but now that we have a high-def look, you can see the games under the sheets a little better. I notice that they even have a Space Paranoids cabinet in there at the beginning (which was at Comic-Con) and towards the end oft he arcade scene you can see a Discs of Tron in the background as well.

As for the trailer itself, I think it’s pretty good. I am blown away by Clu looking like a young Jeff Bridges there – that’s some pretty incredible CG work.  I hope that there’s more to the film than just flashy CG with a good solid story. But we will have to wait until December 17th to witness this on the silver screen, to which I will probably be there on the first showing. 🙂

I suggest putting this on full screen for the best look.

Disney to build a Flynn's Arcade at Tomorrow Land; new pics of Flynn's Arcade in TRON Legacy

March 4, 2010

It seems that news on the new Tron: Legacy movie is rolling out every day this week as part of a build-up to the official trailer release tomorrow and while we are not a movie blog which focuses on covering that, there has been some arcade stuff spiced throughout this.

As you can see above, the trailer tomorrow will show the protagonist wandering through his father’s old arcade, Flynn’s. It’s too bad all the games are covered, I admit to pausing the DVD on TRON to figure out what games were sitting there but with those shrouds over the games, that will make it slightly more difficult. Just for fun, what can you tell from the pic above? I can see a Pac-Man on the right but I’m at a loss at the rest – at least until the trailer comes out.

But as part of all the news here is something quite interesting – in Disney’s Tron hype build-up they are announcing everything from a trilogy of films to a TV show to the recreation of Flynn’s Arcade at their Tomorrow Land facilities. They actually plan on revamping much of the Tomorrow Land areas with Tron-stuff which is cool but I would likely spend most of the time at Flynn’s. The plans to renovate Tomorrow Land won’t be happening until 2012 so we know when to plan our trips. 🙂

UPDATE: Here is another pic from Flynn’s that was released today (click to enlarge). Looks like there is a Nintendo cab on the right. It looks like the black light isn’t on in the Tron cab. I am such a nerd.

Looks like I’m not the only one guessing at what cabs they are.

Viral marketing for TRON Legacy continues to give some love to arcades

February 26, 2010

I’ve always been a big fan of Tron so when it comes to developments of what is going on with the new TRON Legacy movie that comes out in December, I’m intently keeping tabs on what’s going on as Disney runs a pretty cool viral marketing campaign for it. We saw it begin with Flynn’s Arcade at Comic-Con last year and now they have run a nationwide scavenger hunt leading up for showings of the first official trailer for the film. One of the hunts took place  in my city but I don’t know where it was at or what was involved exactly before it was already claimed. Fortunately a guy in Dallas filmed his search, where it involved a girl wearing a Flynn Lives T-shirt playing a Twilight Zone pinball machine so it’s possible that they had people doing scavenger hunts at places where you can find arcade machines all over the country yesterday. You can see that below.

Also arcade-related is this viral website for Encom International. If you check out the “Past” page, it has an alternate timeline where Encom developed the original Tron arcade game and Space Paranoids was the best selling arcade game of 1981. If you look over the page, it looks like Encom became the Microsoft of the Tron universe. I would love it if Disney (or I should say “Encom” 🙂 ) would release those Comic-Con Space Paranoids cabinets to arcades this year, I would pick one up for my own arcade in a heartbeat and from our poll last August, plenty of you would love to play it.

Flynn's Arcade recreated at Comic-Con with a real Space Paranoids cabinet!

July 25, 2009

sparanoids

As part of the hype machine that Disney is creating for the new TRON: Legacy film, they reconstructed Flynn’s Arcade, with tons of retro coin-op machines and to my own personal excitement, a working Space Paranoids arcade machine. I have found two videos of the arcade and some footage of SP which you can watch below. Sadly, the arcade was only a temporary thing but it’s very cool that Disney did this to promote the movie. I have read however that they showed some movie footage at Comic-Con where Flynn’s Arcade actually plays a role in the film, so it is likely we will see more arcade related viral marketing.

As a note to arcade makers out there, if there are no plans for someone to actually release Space Paranoids to the public, then I really hope that someone does. I am quite sure that I am not the only arcade operator out there who would love to have a real Space Paranoids machine and with the existing Tron fanbase I imagine that there are a lot of Tron fans out there (many of which are arcade fans) who would go out of their way to find a Space Paranoids machine. I certainly would.

BTW- I do know of a PC Space Paranoids game that was made by Rogue Synapse – we posted about it a long time ago. From everything I have seen on this, this version at Flynn’s and the aforementioned PC game are different. From reports it sounds like the movement controls on the arcade version need some fine-tuning but I guess it won’t matter if the game is never released.

Now I wish I would have gone to Comic-Con
