New theme park in 2010: Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

October 29, 2009

When it comes to gigantic theme parks, the United Arab Emirates is working hard solidify it’s image as the theme park capital of the world. Another theme park that will soon be joining the fray is Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, which is located southwest of Dubai. The theme park itself is actually located on Yas Island which sits about 30 minutes outside of Abu Dhabi, but they are sticking that city into the name as it will probably help recognition. Ferrari World is the latest theme park to lay claim to the world’s largest indoor theme park  and the facility sits “under a roof designed in the style of a classic double-curve body shell of a Ferrari GT.” The park will have over 20 rides and attractions, including the worlds fastest roller coaster; Italian dining, shopping, hotel space, recreations of Italian landmarks, a large kids play area and more. The website also promises: “Those who have ever dreamed of life in the pit lane of a Grand Prix or the adrenaline rush of travelling at speeds over 200 km/h, will find themselves surrounded by opportunities to indulge their fantasies with unique attractions tailored to every aspect of driving, racing and even building a Ferrari.” If you watch the video on the official site, you can see some of those aspects in action.

While no coin-op arcade games are shown in the promo video, I would be very surprised if they didn’t have an arcade there with Ferrari F355 Challenge on hand along with a number of other racing games seeing how this place will be a racing fans paradise.

Weird: Theme park in UK to offer hypnosis for parents afraid to go on scary rides

August 30, 2009

When you look at the amusement business, you expect to see facilities try what they can do differently to pull people into their premises but I have to admit that I never had thought hypnosisof a hypnotist as being one of those um…perks. Such will be the case at the Chessington World of Adventures in the UK where after surveying some of their younger audience found that kids were “annoyed by parents reluctant to go on the white knuckle rides.” The solution: hire a hypnotist to hypnotize said reluctant parents so they will no longer have a problem with such rides. While it remains to be seen how many people will go for such hypnotherapy, you have to hand it to World of Adventures for trying out something different.

We may as well do a poll for this one!

Sega Republic opens its doors at the Dubai Mall

August 20, 2009

If you are an arcade or Sega fan and you are headed to Dubai for some reason then you have a new attraction to check out while there, Sega’s new indoor theme-park called the Sega Republic. SR has 76,000 sq. ft. of entertainment goodness that is divided amongst five themed zones such as “Speed, Adventure, Sports, Cyberpop and Redemption”. The site features some of Sega’s latest simulator rides such as Storm-G and they even have a Sonic the Hedgehog ride that is based upon Dr. Eggman’s attempts to capture Sonic. They also have a halfpipe simulator that  features “a hi-tech snowboarding half-pipe that gives riders the thrill of throttling up and down a 7-metre incline at speeds of up to 40 km/hr.”

Naturally they also have a sizable arcade that features both video and redemption games and I imagine that it will take more than one visit to the Sega Republic to particpate in everything they have to offer.
