A longer look at Blue Works' FORCE

July 2, 2010

A short while back we covered a student project in Taiwan that set out to recreate an experience similar to Atari’s Warlords, but with modern graphics and a few changes to the formula. At the time we only had a brief teaser look at the game but now they have produced a much longer video which shows the game in action, both from a direct feed as well as some footage of it being played at SOGO, an expo that took place in Taiwan in May.

As a big fan of Warlords and games like it, I would love to see this picked up by one of the arcade manufacturers in Taiwan so it can get a wider release. I would change a couple of things if it were me – namely a scoring system and an explosion effect to occur when a player is destroyed. Otherwise it looks like great multiplayer fun.

A rundown of the GTI Asia Taipei Expo 2010

May 8, 2010

After almost a week of waiting, we finally have a more in-depth look at what went on at the GTI Asia Taipei Expo 2010 in Taiwan this past weekend. To show us what was there, Youtube user HawTian posted three videos but unfortunately they are nauseating slideshows that zip along with a picture a second. To save you the trouble, I watched through the videos a couple of times and wrote down when you can find the different arcade games for each title, so you can pause the video, let it load and then scroll to what you want to see. If some better videos come along then I’ll either update this post or make a new one, depending upon the content. Videos and more embedded after the break

Warlords spiritually returns with FORCE

May 1, 2010

I am fortunate to own an Atari Warlords cocktail machine. It was long a “holy grail” of mine as I always enjoyed playing Warlords on the Atari 2600 as a kid and with the arcade version being superior, I really wanted to have one. It was the most expensive classic game I have ever bought but it was worth it. The people who give the game a shot at my arcade fall in love with it immediately, last week I had one kid declare “this is the best game ever!” in his excitement while playing Warlords with his friends. Would it be awesome to have a modern version of Warlords in arcades with flashier graphics? Absolutely as it’s the perfect multiplayer “party” game. Thanks to a student project in Taiwan they are doing just that with a game they are calling Force.

The game isn’t exactly like Warlords but it’s pretty close – it’s a four player table top game, where each player has a sphere to protect with a shield that they can move to deflect the oncoming ball. Each player has a rotary-like controller which is more of a disc than the knobs that Warlords used but the disc also serves as the button. As it’s a student project I do wonder if it could get a general release for arcades to pick up or not but in the stronger arcade environment of Japan I would say that it’s more of a likely prospect than we’ve seen with other student arcade projects. Those of you who understand Japanese Chinese will have to let us know if any of the text in the video below reveals what release plans they might have for this. EDIT: This is out of Taiwan, my apologies.

UPDATE: More details here from the developer including more video of the game being played

ESP Agent Revealed

July 24, 2008

What if Dragon Punch were a video game?

In case that thought has ever crossed your mind (and I’m sure it has 😛 ), then now you will find out with Global Star’s ESP Agent. We noticed this game in our coverage of GTI2008, an arcade expo held in Taiwan earlier this year but it was difficult to tell what the game was about. But thanks to the new flyer and a video I’ve embedded below, we know what ESP Agent is – it’s very similar to something like Dragon Punch but it has 6 different ‘missions’ for you to accomplish, more with software upgrades. I can guess that they may attempt an international release with this one as the flyer is all in English but we’ll have to wait and see where it ends up. If it earns anything like Dragon Punch does then I’m sure that operators will be all over it, although I’m sure that they’ll hope that no one injures themselves gravely while trying to play it. But despite the slight similarity to Dragon Punch, it is unique enough that I think it will stand out on it’s own, I give it props for not being another racer as we know that there are more than enough of those coming along this year.

A 2nd look at GTI Expo 2008 (w/ a few new games to look at)

May 21, 2008

A few posts below we ran a post on the little-known GTI Expo 2008 that took place a short time ago in Taiwan. It looks like it was a fun show but in addition to what we saw in the previous post, it looks like there were some extra goodies at the show including two new deluxe cabinets by GlobalVR for Aliens and Paradise Lost that I have never seen before. (as always, for the full sized image just click on it)

For the new deluxe Aliens cabinet it almost looks like they just added a new shell to their current deluxe model but I have not seen this configuration for Paradise Lost before (not that it would help that game out much). It could be that these models are only for Asia but we’ll keep an eye out for any of these making it elsewhere.

There are a couple of more Power Boat shots here too, including the ones we have already seen but also a slightly different blue cabinet that has some fencing around it. I’m not sure what the difference between the white and blue cabinets is but I noticed that the blue ones have fencing around them and the white ones don’t, so maybe they have different motion abilities? In taking a closer look at it, the white ones may only have the seat move where the blue ones have the seat and monitor move with it. Time will tell I guess, I wonder which one eases the motion sickness feeling.

There are a couple of drumming games here, one may be a new Percussion Master but my Chinese sucks (OK, it’s non-existent) so I’m not sure about that. One of the two has you pounding those larger drums that they always play in movies when the scene is supposed to be getting your heart racing. That would be a blast to play next to someone who is playing really hard on a different game nearby but I digress.

And to top it of with the “I’m not sure what the frak it is” category, these two games. One is obviously based on those old wooden marble balancing maze you may or may not have played as a kid (I did a couple of times so am I aging myself here?) but I have no clue what it’s called – it has a huge bowling ball sized trackball though and I’d be happy to see it come overseas. And the other one is something called ESP Agent, which looks like it might be a light-gun-esque game but I have no clue (or no frakkin’ idea – sorry I just watched a few BSG episodes the other day) what those things hanging off to the side of the cabinet are. The cords are flimsy like Wiimore Nunchuck cords but those black objects almost look like purses. Is it a game where you use ESP to discover what’s in someone’s purse? Why is it that the JErry character in the background can do an absurdly flexible high kick? I’ve seen stranger games before but I’ll stop making up stuff that it may be until I found out more. There also is a game pictured on the page called Jungle Adventure that has the same setup as one of those games where you throw balls at the screen and for some reason they have flower displays that belong at a wedding reception. It’s either a new direction in marketing coin-op games to wedding receptions or someone forgot to order the right display and they went with it anyways.

<- Make sure you cover up the game with the wedding flowers!

GTI Expo 2008 round up with many new games and SF2 the casino game

May 16, 2008

Sega was not the only company to have an arcade show recently, as the Game Time International Expo 2008 kicked off in Taiwan last week. Thanks to forum user Molloy, he provided us a link to a thread on killercabs.com that featured some pics from the show from a user there named kenji. As always if you want to see the full image, just click on the thumbnails below.

One game that I was particularly interested in was Power Boat by IMOtion. They had a video of the game at ASI (which I have been trying to get a hold of since March) and it definently has changed since then – the cabinet is different and I know that they were working on tweaking the gameplay a little more to make it like HydroThunder. I’m not sure when this will come out but a modern HydroThunder-llike game with a motion base cabinet will probably do well in arcades. Is it me or do these look a little like RaceTV cabinets? Also they have made a new cabinet for Panzer Elite Action. I hope to have some more on Power Boat here shortly.

IGS was there in force, showing off games that I’d love to see them release through American Alpha, their US branch but most likely I’d have to import these games. They had the scrolling fighter Oriental Legend 2 there and Pirate Revenge which we’ve mentioned before. Also Speed Driver 2 was there, one of the few IGS games to use full 3D.

More after the post break including the Street Fighter 2 the Casino game!
