Interesting new shmup now location testing in Japan – Exception

July 9, 2009

A new and interesting shmup is now on location test in Japan and seeing efforts like this makes me long for seeing some good shmups in arcades outside of Japan again. Called Exception, this shmup has elements from games like Asteroids, Blast Works, Mars Matrix, Panzer Dragoon Orta (and probably others I am missing) that with physics processing, combine together to create something quite unique and a bit abstract. The only thing I don’t like about it is the constant blur effect that occurs when blocks are pushed away en masse – it kind of gives me a headache to watch where it keeps blurring up like that (although I’m told that it looks much better on an HD screen as opposed to what you see in the youtube video – that and it’s probably just me getting older :P). The game does also include multiplayer support but I am not sure what the arcade version will have different from the PC version which has already been released.

UPDATE: There is a new official site for the game which includes more information on the arcade version of the game (it will have an extra stage the PC version doesn’t have and different difficulty options so more players will find it easier to approach). Check out that site here.

Neo-Arcadia’s booth @ Japan Expo 2008

July 12, 2008

Japan Expo 2008 was recently held in France and arcade-related website Neo-Arcadia was there with a booth and plenty of screenshots to boot. The arcade presence at the expo brought many games into one place that you would typically find in Japan but would be hard pressed to find all in one place elsewhere. The game roster is pretty impressive, as an example:

Baston: Mark of the Wolves, The King of Fighters’98 Ultimate Match, Samurai Spirits Zero Special, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Melty Blood Act Cadenza ver.A, The King of Fighters XI, Hokuto No Ken , Martial Masters, The Rumble Fish 2, Super Street Fighter II X, Street Fighter Zero 3 Upper, Sengoku Basara X, Guilty Gear Accent Core, Battle Fantasia.

Shoot’em up : Zero Gunner 2, Ketsui, Dragon Blaze, ESP Galuda 2, DoDonPachi Dai Fukkatsu 1.5, Death Smiles, Border Down, Batrider, Mazinger Z, Mushihime Sama Futari Black Label, GigaWing.

Other: Oriental Legend 2, Puzzle Bobble 2X, Windjammers, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Vs ZAFT II

At least I can say that I’ve played a couple of games on that list but I’ve not had the chance to play a majority of them. At least I can vouch for how great Oriental Legend 2 is. Naturally they also had several tournaments running during this time and overall it looks like their booth attracted a great crowd of people.

While there are many pictures of the event at their site, what better for posting than a video tour of the NeoArcadia booth.

New arcade coming to Austin, TX – "Arcade UFO"

June 30, 2008

It seems that I’m not the only ‘crazy’ person who is opening up an arcade out there – a new arcade is in the works in Austin Texas that is also looking to provide an authentically hardcore arcade gaming experience to players and it is called “ArcadeUFO”. The new business is being put together by former employees of the defunct Einstien’s Arcade which shut down earlier this year as the owner decided to move on.

It’s always great to see solid arcade fans setting up an arcade of their own and looking at their game selection, they definently have a good roster of games to choose from, including Tekken 6, Arcana Heart 2, Initial D4, Time Crisis 4, DoDonPachi, Metal Slug 6, Donkey Kong, Ms. Pac-Man & more. They are still working on the space and it should be open soon so if you live in the area, check out their website for more.
