Immersion Copr. invests into new startup called NanoTech Entertainment

June 18, 2008

You might be wondering why I am bringing this up as the names of these companies don’t sound familiar, but it is arcade related. Some time ago a company called Immersion Corporation signed an agreement with GlobalVR to put their force feedback technology into games like NASCAR and Blazing Angels. From what I have experienced in those games, the technology is pretty good and it’s one thing that helps set Blazing Angels apart in the arcade. Now Immersion has invested into a new company that is working on arcade-related products called NanoTech Entertainment and we will be keeping an eye open on this development to see what will come out of it for arcades. In taking a look at the NanoTech site they have some PC perhipherals that work to emualte arcade controls, including a pinball controller which is new to me. They also have created a digital pinball table called MultiPin (pictured to the right) and according to the press release this investment will lead to “future products that include innovative technologies for the arcade, PC, and console gaming platforms.”

and

““Beyond the investment, we intend to feature Immersion’s force feedback technology in our upcoming consumer and coin-op products.”

(my emphasis added).

That last part doesn’t sound like a PC add-on but whether or not they will be creating a brand new arcade game is anyone’s guess at the moment but it is good to point it out now and see where it goes from here in case they do. New startups to the arcade industry are always welcome and I hope we will see more soon. Hit the post break for the press release.

The Big Buck Bowl

May 8, 2008

As I mentioned in the last post, I went to my distributor today to talk about games and some options and one thing we talked about was Big Buck Hunter Online. I did have a chance to play this online a few weeks ago and I automatically saw the appeal – where the game shows you national high scores and it tells you who has it and where they got the score, it gives you that extra incentive to try and beat them out. From the looks of it, BBHPro Online(which uses the CoinUp System) is doing extremely well right now and it should be interesting to see how Safari does when they give that online capability as well.

To give players even more of a reason to play BBHPro Online, Play Mechanix has announced the May National Tournament for the game called the “Big Buck Bowl”. The tournament starts today and will go until May 27th with 52 winners taking home over $2000 in prize winnings. According to the press release, over 17,000 players have created accounts for the game, which is pretty good considering that the game just finished it’s beta phase.

Signature Devices' mysterious new arcade game

March 21, 2008

logotype.gif

Signature Devices Inc., the makers of Paradise Lost released a press release yesterday that left me a little confused at first but after carefully reading it again it sounds like they have completed work on a new arcade title that might have been alluded to back in August of last year although they may have moved on from the VORTEK platform as the new press release makes no mention of that. The title of the new press release is: “Signature Devices, Inc. Completes New First Person Arcade Action Game“. Then in typical fashion of a developer announcing an arcade title they talk about the game without mentioning its name (if the publisher has not yet annouced it, they refrain from revealing the name, which is something I’ve seen before as a standard in the arcade development industry).

Signature Devices, Inc. (Pink Sheets: SDVINews) is pleased to announce that the Company’s new turret-based, first person shooter arcade action game has been completed. The fast-paced game takes place on an alien planet and the player is in the role of an advanced scout for an incoming colonization. With multiple futuristic weapons to select from, the player must combat a variety of alien enemies to stop them from destroying the colony before it is too late.

Sounds like a brand new arcade game that is a little like Paradise Lost mixed with Aliens: Extermination is around the corner. The press release doesn’t mention GlobalVR by name, who they’ve published through before but apparently they are already receiving royalty payments for this new game :

The Company has been receiving royalty payments of $100.00 per unit for each Standard or Deluxe cabinet that contains the Game and $50.00 per software upgrade kit for another first person shooter arcade game it developed, Paradise Lost. Signature Devices maintained the rights for the product and plans on publishing the product for PC and distributing the product on its upcoming phatyaffle.com web 2.0 gaming community.

When I first read this I thought that they might have been talking about a PC only release all along but it sounds like they plan on releasing a PC version of the arcade title sometime soon. Hopefully they are smart enough to give the arcade version enough time to settle into arcades before they do that, otherwise they would undermine themselves.

As we find out more, we’ll be sure to keep you informed!

ASI 2008 promises prizes, events and new games

March 10, 2008

I am hoping to go to ASI 2008 in Las Vegas here in two weeks but it will depend on how much cash I can spare to go down there. Whether I make it or not it is not important although I would love to go and mingle with people in the industry, check out some of the new games and maybe attend a seminar or two. For those that will be able to attend ASI 2008, it is shaping up to be an excellent show with many competitions planned along with cash prize giveaways. For the full rundown, check out the press release:

Show Planners Ready Special Events For Upcoming ASI

LAS VEGAS — Organizers of the Amusement Showcase International said many special events are planned for the 2008 trade show, which runs from March 27 to 29 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. ASI is owned by the American Amusement Machine Association and produced by William T. Glasgow Inc.

The ASI Big Bar, staged on the show floor, returns this year. It will be open Thursday and Friday evening from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A new event, the “Name That Tune” game show, is open to all operators and begins at 5:00 PM as part of “Happy Hour on the Show Floor.” To enter, visitors drop their business cards at the door of the Big Bar starting at 4:00 PM; contestants will be randomly selected.

The Coin-Op Olympics, featuring the industry’s newest games and prizes for victorious participants, takes place Saturday, March 29, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on the show floor. In an ASI first, the public will be invited to the competition to try out new games and vie for prizes; admission is $10. Local celebrities will also be on hand, vying to win as much as $5,000 each for their favorite charities. “Opening the show to the public will generate publicity about both ASI and the industry as a whole,” AAMA said.

The Big Raffle, which benefits the American Amusement Machine Charitable Foundation and offers prizes of new equipment, will be held in the AAMA booth on Saturday, March 29, at 3:00 PM. Entrants must be present to win. Tickets can be purchased until March 19 at coin-op.org, and will also be sold at AAMA’s booth.

The ASI-International Flipper Pinball Association will host its second annual International Pinball and Video Pinball Tournament. The event will be held onsite, and runs all three days of the show.

The World Pinball Championships, held concurrently with ASI, will take place at the Pinball Hall of Fame from March 28 to 30. Spectators are welcome. Some $13,000 in prizes will be awarded. For more information, visit ifpapinball.com.

AAMCF’s Charity Golf Tournament is Wednesday, March 26. Lunch is at 12:30 PM, followed by a shotgun start an hour later. Prizes ranging from cash to gag gifts will be awarded, and a portion of the proceeds will help support children’s charities.

The Century Club will meet Friday, March 28, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in room S223 of the Las Vegas Convention Center. All committee members are encouraged to attend.

Konami’s ATEI 2008 line-up

January 5, 2008

sh12.jpg

Konami has issued a press release regarding it’s presence at ATEI this year and while the line-up isn’t large in terms of how many games they will be showing off, they are still aiming to impress.

One of their highlights is Silent Hill: The Arcade game that despite taking a verbal beating from fans (most of whom have never played it) stated “the game has predominantly been the highest income shooting game in test locations around Europe” thus showing that the game is doing well beyond what some thought it would do.

Also at the show they will be demonstrating Guitar Freaks V4 Rock x Rock and Drum Mania V4 Rock x Rock, two of Konami’s latest Bemani titles which take advantage of Konami’s online e-AMUSEMENT system and may also be connecting to each other so playerscan either jam out together as a band or play head-to-head.

Also Konami plans on demonstrating one of it’s new redemption titles ‘Eledees’, based on the popular family brand. Players attempt to capture colorful characters for a higher score and more tickets.

Konami will be at stand 2240 – be sure to check Arcade Heroes around ATEI time for a look at what they’ll have! Hit the post break to read the full press release! [Discuss on the Forum]
