New Family Entertainment Center opening in Mebane, NC, Z-Bowl

March 22, 2010

Here’s some more news of a new entertainment facility opening up out there, this time in the city of Mebane, NC (North Carolina) called Z-Bowl. While this one isn’t a traditional arcade like the last place we talked about, according to their website they will have “5,000 square feet of the latest arcade games, small ball bowling & great prizes” available when they launch in a couple of weeks. The press release however uses the term “game stations” instead of arcade or coin-op game devices so that makes me wonder if they have a larger focus on console gaming there but since they do use the term arcade as I quoted above from the website, we’ll stick with that. They also have a bar, 18 AMF bowling lanes, a billiards, shuffleboard & darts area, party rooms and more to do, which sounds like fun.  If you live in the area and are also looking for work, Z-Bowl is hiring, with a job fair to take place on Friday (March 26th).

More details will probably be added to their website when they open in April. You can visit that site here.

Addendum: Editor makes a great point in the comments: “So let me get this straight – Capcom, SEGA and NAMCO are building new amusement venues. There are over 20 new venues opening around mid-USA and there is a hoard of new venues in North Africa and India in development. So that would be the dead amusement scene then!”

James Ko leaves Andamiro USA to form Pipeline Games, INC.

February 11, 2010

A few days ago I heard that in a surprise announcement, the CEO of Andamiro USA (makers of games like NX Absolute) was leaving the company to pursue a different opportunity. Today, he sent out a press release stating that he left Andamiro to form his own coin-op game company called Pipeline Games, INC. Not only does he already have some products lined-up to produce, he already has registered a booth at the Amusement Expo 2010 in Vegas next month. The website for Pipeline Games is very incomplete at the moment but it does list three products – Grip Strength, SlimStop and SlimStop DX. A quick search on a couple of search engines don’t reveal any relevant results for those games right now so whether his company will produce any video product is something we will have to wait for. Still, it’s always great to have another company join the coin-op ranks so good luck to Mr. Ko and his company in their efforts!

June 30, 2009

In case you are one of the many individuals out there who are looking to open up your own arcade or other out-of-home entertainment facility, it is always helpful to read about the experiences that other people have had in pursuing the same idea. While every person will have a different experience in opening up their facility, there are a number of issues that will be encountered by just about every small business owner as they fight to establish their center.

The St. Petersburg Times of Tampa Bay Florida has posted an interview with the owner of an entertainment facility in that area called Xtreme Fun Center, which is owned by Steve McCabe. Steve discusses some of the challenges he faced in opening his facility (such as frequent hurricanes), what is was like transisitioning from a ‘day job’ to running a small business and more. In looking at their website they offer several entertainment options from laser tag, batting cages, an arcade, karaoke and more. Here’s a commercial for the Xtreme Fun Center and you can visit their website by clicking on the link below.
