More bad news for consumer game mags (with arcade-related thoughts)

The bad news just keeps coming for print magazines in the US, with the end of EGM and the sale of HardCore Gamer Magazine on eBay. Of course this comes about by the fact that ripprint has just had a very difficult time in keeping up with the internet and in particular big gaming sites and blogs where gamers can get their news in a flash as opposed to once a month. I have been contributing arcade reviews for HardCore Gamer Magazine for some time now and I have no idea how this will change but I suppose it depends on who buys it up. If the magazine sticks around, I hope that they keep the friendly attitude towards arcades going, if not however then I suppose it’s not a major loss. While I have critical of game mags for ignoring arcades as a whole before, if no one is reading them in the first place then the effect of these mags going under isn’t going to hurt arcades (or other video games) much at all. Still, kudos for the editors at HGM for giving arcades some well-deserved attention.

If I had a bunch of back issues of mags like EGM, it would be cool to take some scans of old arcade reviews, just to reminisce of the times when they actually did care. In fact, what game magazines did you like to read arcade reviews in ‘back in the day’?

‘Amusement’ Magazine shows some love for arcades

If you have followed the arcade scene for a while, then it is no secret that most gaming magazines tend to ignore arcades entirely unless some big name like Street Fighter or Guitar Hero is attached to the game. It’s a shame really, but that’s one reason why we’re here. Still, it is important to give credit to those publications that do go above and beyond the  occasional obligatory mentioning of arcade gaming like I mentioned above and the most recent case for that goes to the new French magazine Amusement. While I do not have a copy handy to see what details it pours over in relation to arcades (not that I would understand most of it – my Portuguese only gets me so far with French), you can see some sample scans of the magazine on their main site and in it they show a few arcade related things, such as with the “Arcade: Press 2008 to continue” article found in their 2nd issue (pictured above). And then, there was magazine coverage

August 15, 2008

It’s been a while since arcades got a lot of attention that they deserved in mainstream gaming magazines. I have tried to combat that a little through articles I have written for HardCore Gamer Magazine and for a while (their most recent issue includes a review for Primeval Hunt that I wrote not long after ASI) they have been one of the very few voices willing to give arcades a fair shake (which reminds me, I need to get another article written up for them) but unfortunately they are now only publishing once every quarter so it’s not something you’ll run into that often.

Anyways, in several recent game magazines that have hit store shelves you might be surprised to find a bit of arcade coverage in them. I’m not kidding! It might not be exactly what you would expect – most of it just discusses Street Fighter IV while leaving out any mention of the fact that there are several companies producing brand new coin-op games, several of which are exclusive to arcades – but it is a start, almost like a nice drizzle after a long drought. We’ll have to see what happens here in a few weeks when manufacturers start showing off new content. IMO it would be wise for arcade makers to make a demo disc to send out to the media, with footage of the game in action or something to perk interests in the media but that’s just me.

Blazblue mentioned in GameInformer; Primeval Hunt in Hardcore Gamer Magazine and Gamepro joins the fray

June 13, 2008

I have been critical of the lack of arcade coverage in GameInformer in the past so when they do give some coverage to arcades it’s only fair that I point that out as well. In the latest issue of the game magazine they have a small preview of the upcoming arcade fighter Blazblue on pg. 77. So kudos to them for pointing it out but there is still room for improvement as Japan is not the only place releasing new arcade games these days.

And onto another game magazine, HardCore Gamer Magazine. I still write for them and in the latest issue there is a review of Sega’s Primeval Hunt (check the very last page). Naturally what I originally wrote had to be trimmed down to fit but nothing important was lost. You can download a PDF of the issue for free here. While the magazine only publishes something quarterly now (they are focusing more on the online aspect of gaming news instead of the publishing realm) I’ll still write arcade stuff for them as often as I can. In this issue prior to this one I reviewed GlobalVR’s NASCAR and I am thinking that for the next one I’ll do something from Raw Thrills’.

UPDATE: I also am told that the latest issue of Gamepro has an article on arcades showing the best places in the US to go and play. I’ll have to find a copy of it and check it out.

HardCore Gamer Magazine w/ NASCAR Arcade review

March 20, 2008

It’s been a while since I made any posts about HardCore Gamer Magazine as it’s been a while since they released an issue. They used to release magazines on a monthly basis but recently decided to switch to a quarterly release schedule, citing the influence of the internet and the waning interest in printed gaming media. I still am going to write arcade articles for them however – in this issue they printed a review of NASCAR Racing that I wrote – it’s been a few months since I wrote it and after re-reading it there are a few things I would change (such as re-using certain words less) but I still think that it’s a fun game that I’ve enjoyed every time I have played it.  I would have more reviews in the magazine but so far all I have got is one page per issue. The review is on the very last page of the issue and even has a reference to Arcade Heroes, in case anyone is interested. They offer the magazine as a free download via their website (it’s Volume 4 Issue 1). One reason I bring this up is to point out that not every printed game magazine out there ignores the arcade industry as though it doesn’t exist anymore.

HardCore Gamer Issue 30 out

December 1, 2007

hgm30.jpg

The latest edition of HardCore Gamer is out and the arcade entry this month is America’s Army. Of course it has plenty of other excellent console related reviews which are good as well but it’s always good to point out where arcades get recognition. Next month expect to see a NASCAR review. Also mentioned in this issue is the arcade version of Time Crisis 4 which you may have heard is headed to the PS3. What would you like to see in a future issue of HGM?

BTW I caught a mention of arcades in the latest issue of Gameinformer (the one with Ghostbusters on the cover) and as usual they did little research on the subject so it ends up being something negative – to the point of making it sound as though arcades are totally dead and that there are no new releases coming out. Funny, I imagine that all the people that recently attended IAAPA may have something to say about that. But maybe I’m expecting too much from a ‘big’ magazine like GI, I mean it’s just so darned hard to research what’s going on in arcades when you’ve got plenty overhyped console games to write reviews about that your advertisers are paying for.
