The Surface iBar at Las Vegas' Rio

June 19, 2008

It has annoyed me how few video arcade games are in pubs and bars these days and I wonder if this could be the answer. Now as cheesy as this video maybe, it does show some of the potential that Microsoft’s Surface has. Who’s to say that the likes of Namco, Intelligent Technologies and Sega (as well as consumer developers) couldn’t possibly develope game for the Surface. Sadly I still think we’re along way off seeing the Surface being a common sight, due to it’s well known high price tag. However the fact that this iBar has a whole bar full of them can only give me hope.

One planet under pinball article about Pinball championships in Vegas

April 1, 2008

(Picture by Steve Marcus of main competitors Bowen Kerins and Neil Shatz after Kerins won the IFPA Championship)

One thing I missed while at ASI was the IFPA Pinball Championships that were held in conjunction with the ASI show in Las Vegas this past weekend although I did see at least two people there for the championship as they had Rio Pinball Clube shirts on from Brazil (I’ve mentioned their website before) and were talking in Portuguese.

So how did it all go? The Las Vegas Sun comments not only the Championship but on the state of pinball and how players feel about it in current times. It’s a pretty good article that shows how some of us still have a good outlook on pinball despite the fact that it is not the fad that it once was. I believe that it will take more kids getting hooked on the game to increase the base of players as well as interest but that can be difficult in these times as some just don’t get it.

I’m headed to ASI afterall

March 26, 2008

Well it wasn’t looking like I was going to make it to ASI this year but as luck would have it, things have worked out in the end (pretty much at the last minute) where I’ve been able to make the ends meet for it to work. I won’t be able to go down for the entire show – I’ll miss whatever happens tomorrow but I will be there for the show on Friday and Saturday. I’ll get as many pictures and video as my camera will fit an I’ll see about an interview or two as well.

Reminder: ASI 2008 this week in Vegas

March 24, 2008

The UK had ATEI, Japan had AOU and now the US is going to have ASI. Known as the Amusement Showcase International, ASI is held every year in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA and in addition to lectures for operators to help them improve their business, we’ll also get to see the latest arcade titles that are already on the scene or will be headed to the scene later this year. You might have noticed that over the past few days we’ve seen more announcements of new games coming along and a lot of that has to do with publishers gearing up for the show.

As a reminder for anyone interested in going, this Saturday the show will open to the public for four hours so everyone can get a chance to come in and check out the new games. They also will be holding two big tournaments “one for the public and one for celebrities – and a raffle benefiting the American Amusement Machine Charitable Foundation, for six unbelievable prizes, including the iPhone, a Panasonic Wireless Home Theater System and Global VR’s EA Sports™ Nascar® Racing game.”

I only live about 7 hours away from Vegas by car but unfortunately I won’t be able to make it this year due to certain financial circumstances. But that won’t stop us from reporting any news that we come across that spills out of the show so stay tuned as the week progresses.

Passing through Vegas and need an arcade to go to?

February 3, 2008

When most people think of gaming in Vegas, only gambling comes to mind but even ingameworks.jpg large casinos the chances of finding an arcade game room there are pretty good. In fact there are a number of arcades in Vegas, from small game rooms to large gaming centers that are practically amusement parks in themselves (including Sega Gameworks). Now finding all of these places can be an adventure in and of itself if you head down to Vegas but if you don’t want to bother with that I came across a website that reviews a number of arcades in Las Vegas for you. In addition to written information they even have a videos in a few of the reviews (such as Gameworks) I have no idea if this covers all of the arcades to be found in Vegas but it’s a great place to start if you just want to find some places to play some arcades or pinball games. Hit the link below for the list and reviews.
