Justice League: Heroes United now available

February 20, 2009

jl42_cabpic_graytmold_lftAccording to my local distributor, GlobalVR’s Justice League arcade title should now be available at a variety of distributors across the country and that means that it won’t be long before it will start making appearances at different locations. I was also told that they should have one on their show floor today so when I stop by later this afternoon I am going to check it out. Once again, this marks the first brawler we have seen in arcades since Sega released Asian Dynamite a couple of years ago for the Naomi hardware and it will be interesting to witness how players take to seeing the genre again. JL has already received a round of criticism from people seeing the screenshots on the net but according to TwistedSupreme and HeavyElectricty who played the game at ATEI, it looks much better in person on the HD screen than in the screenshots. As far as brawlers themselves go, they really work best in arcades anyways so if we see more here in the near future then I won’t be one to complain.

Justice League: Heroes United is now listed as “Already Released” on our arcade release list for 2009. Also, in case you missed previous coverage of the game, we have video of it in action here by AH owner and writer TwistedSupreme and some more comments on it by AH writer HeavyElectricty here.

As a side note, this now makes 8 games we have listed as released for the US for the year of 2009. No that’s not amazing when compared to console releases but it’s a good trend for arcades to be hitting when we only have a handful of companies out there making games. It’s certainly far overdue for the naysayers out there to stop propigating the whole “arcades are totally dead” myth (which has always been ridiculous from the start as it doesn’t help the business of arcade operators like myself for people to go around chanting that on their news blogs, forums, etc. since there are still thousands of us around and it’s hard enough to get people in the door without them with a notion in their heads that there can’t be anything new at our locations).

We have received a couple of new screenshots of GlobalVR’s new Justice League: Heroes United arcade brawler title, which you can see in full view by clicking on the thumbnails below.

In addition to those we have a little info on the location testing of the game. So far the verdict on the game : “People love playing it”. If anyone out there has had a chance to get their hands on the game we’d certainly like to hear your thoughts on it and perhaps we’ll hear HeavyElectricity’s thoughts on the game next week (thanks for the correction HV)  when he visits ATEI. As I said before, I’m very curious to see how this plays, I always loved games like Die Hard Arcade and Dynamite Deka so I’d like to see how this compares and where it stands out. Also, I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but it is a yellow label game so I don’t know of any arcades that won’t carry those.

UPDATE: – A couple of distributor sites are now listing a price for JL. BMI Gaming is listing the standard version of the game at $3975 and the deluxe at $7975 , with the prices going up to $4275 and $8275 after a sale they are having; BHM Vending is listing the standard version of the game at $4600, deluxe at $9000. Prices always vary between distributors but it’s good to see the standard version of the game below the $5000 mark.

Global VR has announced that they will be showcasing their latest title, Justice League: Heroes United at the upcoming ATEI 2009 show. With the press release they also have included some pictures of the cabinet, jl26_cabpic_lftwhich comes in two flavors, standard and deluxe but pricing and availability are currently unavailable but should be revealed soon. We also should have some hands-on information about it straight from the show so if you’ve been wanting to know more, stay tuned. It certainly is good to see someone trying out a brawler for arcades again, the last one I know of was Asian Dynamite in ’05. For more info on the game, check out the press release after the break and discuss it on the forums.

IAAPA: Guitar Hero, American Idol, Justice League, more

OK, we have finally got some stuff from IAAPA thanks to Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report and it looks like it’s been a great show so far. Here are a bunch of pics for Guitar Hero and a few more from American Idol. We’re still waiting on finding out some extra details on the games but at least we have a better look now. Click to enlarge them:

UPDATE: Bemanistyle has more details on GH Arcade. They say it’s very similar to GHIII but the controllers are built to the standards of Konami’s Guitar Freaks (i.e. much better quality than the home version). They also have a pic of Andamiro’s Pump It Up NX Absolute!.

Seeing how Raw Thrills/Play Mechanix has held several online tournaments this year with Big Buck Hunter giving away many thousands of dollars, we can expect to see some really big GH competitions in arcades next year. With the Coin-Up system arcade operators can also hold their own tournaments, usually cash pot style so there will be plenty of tourneys to go around with GH.

While GlobalVR did not have Justice League at their booth, they did release a video of the game in action (which also shows the cabinet). They are not quite ready to release the game yet (thus meaning that this is not the final build) and are still holding onto details but at least we have a teaser video which shows a little bit of gameplay. The game uses cel-shaded gvrgraphics and is apparently two players (I had thought that it might be a 4 player game at one point). You can watch below by clicking on the link for GVR’s website. Otherwise at the GVR booth they had NFS: Carbon, NASCAR and Paradise Lost from what we have seen so far. We tried to upload the Justice League trailer but the codec isn’t supported by WordPress’s video player. Go figure.

Since we’re also on the subject of American Idol in this post, it appears that there are a couple of devices at the show which will compete with AI’s video recording feature. First is a game called Dancing Heads, where you can “Be a star, no talent required”. It looks like a photo booth that will take your picture and integrate it into some sort of music video and dispense a DVD of the video for you to use afterwards. The second game which does sort of the same thing (this appears to be the new trend in photo booth technology) lets you select a song and then it records you bopping to the beat where you then get a DVD showing you and your friends dancing around to the song. I can’t make out a specific name for this one although it has giant boxing gloves on top of it, if that counts for anything.

GlobalVR to bring DC Comic’s Justice League to arcades

July 2, 2008

A little while back you might recall that we posted a press release from Signature Devices that referred to some sort of arcade game that would be featuring licensed characters from a DC comic franchise. We didn’t hear anything about it afterwards as apparently they jumped the gun way ahead of time and GlobalVR was quite unhappy with the news. Fortunately the game is still on track and will see a release within the next few months and today I have an official press release that gives us some interesting details about the upcoming game and it looks like Warner is quite excited about it too. In fact if you decide to go to ComicCon next month, you will find the game there, which is a smart move on the part of Warner & GlobalVR.

From the press release, it states:

GLOBAL VR has taken elements from the most popular adventure and fighting games and combined them to offer players a totally unique and compelling arcade experience. Players will be able to play in single or multi-player modes as they command their heroes through a maze of villains such as Joker, Doomsday, and Darkseid, that are found on the different game levels.

From the sound of it, the game will be a beat ‘em up of sorts and it should be multiplayer on the same cabinet. I’m quite excited to hear about this development as I have been disappointed with the flood of racing games we’ve been hearing about as of late and I have been hoping that someone would bring us something a little different that we haven’t seen in arcades in a while. Also from the press release they mention that GlobalVR will be making a novelty redemption game based upon the license. We will be covering the game in more detail shortly (with screen captures and more) so stay tuned for more. And before anyone asks, don’t expect to see a console release of this game anytime soon as GlobalVR says that they understand the need for more exclusive arcade content and that is what they are looking at giving us now. Hit the post break for the full press release!
