Pat Laffaye smashes the “Costanza Score” on Frogger

January 5, 2010

We have spoken of the Costanza Score before – the mythical score on the arcade game Frogger that was shown in an episode of the comedy TV show Seinfield back in the 90’s. When that score was shown on the show, it was more than double the world record that had been set previously and while organizations like Twin Galaxies offer prizes for beating the Costanza score, no one had managed to do that – until now.

On New Years Eve, gamer Pat Laffaye achieved a score of 896,980 points on an original Frogger machine, which was witnessed and verified by Twin Galaxies referee Eric Akeson. Pat also holds the world record for Paperboy as well. Congrats Pat!

A challenge towards the George Castanza Frogger high score happening now

June 20, 2009

If you have ever watched the sitcom Seinfield, chances are good if you are an arcade fan that you have seen the episode where George Castanza comes across an old Frogger arcade machine at an old pizzeria that he went to as a teenager. It’s a pretty funny episode and one thing that has stood out from it is George’s high score on the game – 860,630 points. The reason it stands out is because in the real world, the world record high score for the game according to Twin Galaxies for many years was a bit lower than that, although a few players have made some strides towards the Castanza score.

Right now, Donald Hayes is trying to beat that score on a real Frogger machine. He has actually accomplished the feat in MAME and currently there is a live video on Twin Galaxies of the attempt that you can see by going here.  A press release detailing the event which is happening at the Challenge Arcade in Pennslyvania can also be read by clicking on the link below.

The unofficial Frogger DDR game

July 16, 2008

I’m not sure who the owner of Frogger is right now, if it’s Konami or someone else but this would be a great idea for a new DDR game. At the Newport Aquarium in northern Kentucky, USA they have a modified set of DDR pads connected to a 3D Frogger game that anyone can walk up and play with. I’m not sure if the Frogger game is one that was designed just for this exhibit or if they are using the first 3D version of Frogger that Hasbro released roughly 10 years ago (from the snapshot the 3D graphics are pretty basic). From the source it sounds like it plays pretty well and a lot of people still hold a great affection for the arcade’s best known green character so a new game like this would probably do pretty well as an official release.
