The Arcade Heroes podcast #13 – not too professional but it works

Here continues the tradition of not really holding to a tradition with the Arcade Heroes podcast with Episode 13. Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report joins me once again as we discuss

While it doesn’t look like much, it goes on for nearly an hour and 45 minutes. Thanks to Kevin for joining me at my arcade via Skype and apologies for our listeners when Kevin was cut out inexplicably a couple of times (which I why I call this not too professional) and a kid stopped the recording on the computer I was using right at the end but I think we were able to salvage it there. Either way, you get probably more details out of this about Amusement Expo 2010 than anything else so I hope you enjoy it.

Amusement Expo 2010 Wrap-up part 2 (this time in pictures!) UPDATED

We’ve provided a bit of video from Amusement Expo but there were a couple of things that I wasn’t able to grab with my camera but Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report was also there and captured a few moments with his camera, including something I had completely missed, with Namco getting four girls to wander around with Pac-heads on. Amusement Expo 2010: Friction Game Studios, Pipeline Games, Lights Out Boxing, & the ICE booth

Also at the show for it’s first official showing was the indie developed arcade shooter, Friction. I actually played through the whole game and when I had left the show I still had the highest score by far (I’ll have to ask what it was as I forgot the exact number). This game is a lot of fun and when it starts it rarely let’s up. There are a ton of things to destroy and that’s part of the fun, just shooting everything that is breakable. One thing that was in the build that wasn’t in any videos we had previously seen was blood and the game sports a red label now. In addition to being fun, the game looks really nice in person and I hope that the video can reflect that on some level. No word on a release yet, but there was some strong interest in the game from what I saw, which is especially nice considering that this is Friction’s first event.

We just recently heard about the formation of a new coin-op game company called Pipeline Games Inc. and they had a decent sized booth at the show with some very interesting products. First is the physical game, The Grip Strength. As you’ll see below, the game is brief and simple and it can work for either ticket redemption or video only depending upon the location. The player selects the appropriate options (except for Phil here who accidentally picks a female :P) and then spends ten seconds pulling the grip to see how strong they are (or aren’t). After you do both hands, the game give you an average and prints out the results on a paper ticket. Also there was This game SUCKS which is an interesting mini-crane that is great for small locations and a few other physical redemption games.

One surprise at the show was a little cocktail cabinet called Lights Out Boxing which was found in an unlikely place – a bill validator booth that was next to the GlobalVR booth. I wasn’t able to find out exactly who it is that made this and Kevin Williams wasn’t sure either the last time I asked him. As you can see it’s also some sort of indie effort as they housed a flash game into the cabinet and wired it up for coin-op play. One problem with it – the Windows cursor was visible in the middle of the screen the whole time. A game like this that is more fluid graphically would be pretty cool, it reminds me of certain boxing games from the past, such as Boxing on the Atari 2600 by Activision.

The ICE booth was pretty big and with it at the front of the show, they made their presence known. They had a few new Panic Musuem cabinets there including a completely redesigned (and nicer looking) theater cab and the new 47″ deluxe cabinets. They also had some redesigned Dog Tags machines (although they weren’t as popular this time as they were at IAAPA), Robin Hood video redemption and a few Rok N’ Bloks cabinets which have been rebranded as Tippin’ Bloks.

First full look at the indie arcade game Friction

It has been a while since we first teased about a new arcade light-gun shooter coming to arcades from an independent game studio known as Friction Game Studios and today, we can reveal quite a bit more about the game.  I have been excited about this game since I first saw it in action at AMOA 2008 and one thing I particularly liked about the entire project was that it has been designed with the small operator in mind. From the price to parts replacement and game quality, this game is going to be a great deal for ops looking to add another arcade exclusive title to their list.

As you can see from the picture above (as well as after the break where I have embedded several more pics) the game is housed in a cabinet that features a 27″ CRT monitor; there are two light-guns (force feedback is optional); a bit of slick artwork all over the cabinet; and two 180 watt speakers for superb sound.

To give you a better idea of how the game plays, here are four videos of Friction in action. Graphically it has changed a little bit from when I saw it, with better lighting effects and lot more particles being thrown around. While we do not have an exact idea on when this game will be available, as you can see it’s finished and should be available soon. The game will be sold direct so checking the website for the game for details on how to order is probably wise. We look forward to seeing what else FGS will bring to the arcade industry in the future so give them your support!

Brief update on indie arcade titles Dark Presence and Friction

It has been a little while since we’ve posted updates on a couple of upcoming arcade titles that are in development by a couple of independent game studios, but that does not mean that nothing is going on with these games. In fact, both games are quite close to completion and we will be featuring a closer look at both of these games very soon.

First are some new level screenshots for the arcade fighter Dark Presence by Galloping Ghost Productions. I actually had seen these a little while ago but I forgot to ask about using them for the site but since they are on Galloping Ghost’s webpage now they should be fine to use. I am quite honored by the addition of my own arcade to this level, that should be pretty cool to see in action. These shots are the level players will be on, these from the street level are for the character Trenton. All shots can be found here.

Also they have a list of arcades that will be hosting the game for a brief time on their nationwide tour. If you would like them to stop by your own arcade during the tour, the contact information is on the page I’m linking to. Check out the arcades currently on the tour here. Next up is the light-gun shooter Friction. We have previously covered this game here and here, and in case you missed out on this one, give it a look. Friction is a title that has been designed with the small operator in mind so it won’t set us back much to purcahse. The screenshot you see here is from a recent build of the game that I used in a large 16-page feature article covering arcades in 2010 for Hardcore Gamer Magazine (which is probably the largest such feature to make it into a mainstream gaming magazine in years) that you can read for free here. The article features some extra info on Friction not discussed on the site previously. We are going to have much more to show you on this game soon, so stay tuned.

Back from AMOA '08 – some thoughts, impressions and a fire (and my little part in all this) UPDATED

I’m back from AMOA 2008 and it was fun. I got to see many new games that are coming to the States, talk with great people and come away with video and impressions of what’s coming our way. I also got to see more of Las Vegas than last time, it’s only the third time I’ve been there and it was nice to see many things that I’ve heard people talk about like the Bellagio fountain show and more. I also dropped by Sega’s Gameworks and color me green with envy – just one of their Afterburner Climax Super Deluxe games is worth about everything I have in my arcade and they have two of them. 😉 They have a lot of great games there, including OutRun 2 SPX, HOTD4 Special (yes the one with 100″ screens), Jurassic Park Special (I never knew that this existed), Too Spicy, Lethal Enforcers 3 and lots more. I also was able to pick up a Tsunami TSUMO cab that’s in OK condition, that should arrive at my arcade next week and hopefully it will give me a boost in people coming in. I also might switch my Marvel VS. Capcom from 1 to 2 and upgrade my Drift games to use a keypad AND upgrade my Safari to online. More on that later.

So let’s get to it! First let me say that arcades are not dead. I say that all the time but I think that video developers came along with a strong showing to further prove that we’re making progress with arcades once again. Secondly, let me explain the part about the fire. Yes there was a fire at the GlobalVR and Trio-Tech booths yesterday. Fortunately no one was hurt and the damage was minimal. My little part – I was playing Need For Speed Carbon along with some other fellows at that moment and I think that everyone playing all the games at the GVR booth AND the Trio-Tech booth at the same time tripped something that started the fire. I’m not entirely sure of how it was hooked up and what happened exactly but the moment our games powered off the fire started. As you can see in the image to the right, it attracted the attention of quite a few people.

Beyond that though here’s a run-down of what I saw and don’t worry, I’ll get to posting videos of them all along with more specifics from each company as time permits. The first booth I came across was Raw Thrills’ and they had Nicktoons Nitro, Big Buck Hunter Pro Online, Big Buck Safari Online, Tokyo Drift and Super Bikes. Next to them was Sega with a much larger booth than they had at ASI and there they had Rambo (in deluxe and standard), Primeval Hunt, a new game called Sega Clay Challenge that uses the Atomiswave board (and we thought that the Atomiswave was dead), Sega Rally 3 in both configurations, a new version of Shoot This! Win This! and the Mini-Rider 2. Stern Pinball was behind them and while that rumor I mentioned a couple of posts ago about a Transformers pinball wasn’t true, they did have something there that surprised me quite a bit – a Spiderman Redemption game. I don’t know if Stern has ever done redemption before (you can hook ticket dispensers up to pinball games though) so this was unexpected. They also had Family Guy, Shrek, Batman and Indiana Jones there.

Moving further into the hall you next come to GlobalVR’s booth where they had four Need For Speed Carbon games linked (two deluxe, two standard, no conversions), four NASCAR deluxe games linked (with the new upgrade), a Blazing Angels, a GlobalVR Classics cab and Paradise Lost inside of a new cabinet design that was previously used with Aliens. TrioTech was next to them but I didn’t see anything new there. South of TrioTech was Andamiro and they had a strong showing with their Pump It Up Pro titles but the biggest surprise of all was they had two Arcana Heart 2 cabinets there! I had no idea that this was coming to the States but it is and soon, I’ll have more details shortly.

Incredible Technologies had a large booth with all of their current IPs on display, including Golden Tee 2009, the new Power Putt, Silver Strike Bowling, and Toss Pro: Bags. All of the games are using their new small footprint cabinet design, which does not include a monitor in the package which reduces the price for the cabinet but you’ll need to come up with an HDTV to mount on the wall or somewhere else. Namco was further south but had a small booth with only two videos, the PacMan/Galaga bartop and Rockin’ Bowl-A-Rama. I didn’t get a chance to talk with them and find out about MT3 DX or if they plan on bringing Nirin over.

And of course I was among the first people to check out Friction by Friction Game Studios. Many thanks to Juan and Jim for showing that to me and being courteous (and patient with all my questions). Having seen the game in person now I’m colored impressed. I certainly looks better live than in screencaps or the compressed video below. The power-up system hadn’t been implemented in the build I saw (which is why you see them seemingly gain power-up weapons at random) but the sound and physics are all there and they showed me a few interesting things with that (including how to make enemies fly towards the screen, which can be fun). There are a lot of things to break as well as to cause to explode and the levels were nice and long. There is also a bit of randomization as to how and what enemies will appear on your screen, determined by who you shoot first which can change the game everytime you play. Hopefully they were able to get what they needed at the show to bring this game to arcades soon so stay tuned for more. It was also flattering to hear that word about Friction was already making the rounds at the show as some people had read about it from the site, so I’m glad to hear how often people in the industry check out the site.

Unfortunately one game I did miss was Get Outta My Face! which was supposed to be at the show but I forgot to contact the author on where I could find him so I didn’t get to see it. If he was there then he wasn’t in a booth but I hope that he was able to show the game to the distributors.

UPDATED: I found out the unfortunate news that someone apparently died of a heart attack at the show on Friday. I don’t know who it was but it’s definently sad news to come over the show.
