A rundown of the GTI Asia Taipei Expo 2010

May 8, 2010

After almost a week of waiting, we finally have a more in-depth look at what went on at the GTI Asia Taipei Expo 2010 in Taiwan this past weekend. To show us what was there, Youtube user HawTian posted three videos but unfortunately they are nauseating slideshows that zip along with a picture a second. To save you the trouble, I watched through the videos a couple of times and wrote down when you can find the different arcade games for each title, so you can pause the video, let it load and then scroll to what you want to see. If some better videos come along then I’ll either update this post or make a new one, depending upon the content. Videos and more embedded after the break

Kevin Williams has sent us a link to a large number of images from the Insert Coin 09 event and by all appearances, it looks like a great success. There are too many to post here but if you want to take a look, click here.

Here are some interesting ones I found and cherry-picked (click to enlarge):

July 18, 2009

Just a reminder that there are two big arcade events happening in two different parts of the world this fine summer weekend.

First is the expo all fighter fans look forward to, EVO 2009 in Las Vegas. So far it sounds like turnout has been exceptional to the event and thanks to reader Chris Ainsworth, here is a link to some photos of the first day.

UPDATE: Thanks to Aaron Auzins, here is a link to some live streams from the event provided by Capcom: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/evochampionship

UPDATE #2: Day 2 photos by Chris Ainsworth; also Daigo “The Beast” wins the SFIV tournament.

Next up, Insert Coin in Northampton, UK. There is a lot of fighting goodness to get there as well but on top of that they have many other types of games. The news page for Insert Coin (which includes a Twitter feed that is being constantly updated by Kevin Williams of the Stinger Report) can be found here.

Another arcade show is fast approaching, this one is taking place next month on July 18th-19th in Northampton, UK. Already the event has sold over 7,000 tickets and will cater to every aspect of the arcade industry from the players on up. Several tournaments are slated to take place (including competitions on SFIV and Tekken 6) over the two day event and on top of that players will be able to pick from over 250 games to play and they can even purchase parts and see some of the latest coin-op offerings. It is shaping up to be a major show and will even be covered by some television and radio sources so we can add this yet again to the arcades are not dead argument we’re constantly pushing forward. 😉

The 1st Sydney Pinball Festival

May 21, 2009

pano_1stone-926px

Despite the fact that there is only one pinball manufacturer around these days, interest in pinball itself doesn’t seem to be waning, if the number of pinball expos popping up around the world is any indication. The most recent festival that celebrates the game took place in Sydney Austrailia and Just One More Game got a chance to visit the show and they have posted their review. It looks like it was a lot of fun as there were plenty of pins to play, stacked back-to-back and side-to-side in quite a large room. Stern’s latest offerings were there to be seen, which includes 24 and NBA pinball. It sounds like people really enjoyed the NBA pin so that’s good for Stern since the game has appeal in international markets.

On top of that, one enthusiast at the expo was showing off their own home-made pinball machine, Coconut Island. The use of an LCD monitor is pretty interesting (and IMHO it’s about time someone tried that) but it’s hard to see the playfield very well from the pic. It’s taken the designer 2 years to make it – I am curious to know if he plans on making more than one.

For the full run down, check it out at Just One More Game.
