Not every genre found in gaming is as suited towards competitive gaming as fighters are and that important aspect of such games is the new subject behind a documentary film, Pixel Kombat. The film (or Hadokumentary as the filmmakers Jac & Johan like to call it) follows some of the worlds best fighting game players, covers five years worth of tournaments and covers events in France, Japan and the US. There is currently no release date set for the film, but they have a trailer out for it so it shouldn’t be too much longer. You can follow news for Pixel Kombat here.
Last September we ran a brief story on a new documentary on pinball called “Special When Lit” and I sort of forgot about it until recently. Now, the documentary will be appearing at a few different upcoming film festivals, including the Los Angeles United Film Festival(Apr. 29th-May 6th), the Buffalo Niagra International Film Festival (Apr. 16th-25th), and the Wisconsin Film Festival (this Saturday, Apr. 17th). The filmmakers describe the film as such: “This is the definitive story of the rise and fall of pinball as told by the fans, collectors, designers and champion players from across the globe. A game, a sport, a lifestyle – pinball takes this eclectic bunch of self-confessed ‘pinheads’ back to their youth as they open up passionately to reveal the attractions of the ‘world’s funnest toy’.” The film will be hitting DVD and Blu-Ray sometime later this year.

A couple of years ago I had the opportunity of reviewing a documentary film about pinball called “Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball”. I enjoyed it, in part because at the time I knew very little about pinball history or what kind of work went into creating one game. Now another documentary is about to make it’s debut with pinball as the primary subject and it looks like it will also be a winner. Called “Special When Lit”, the focus behind this film is not just about the game itself but also behind the fans who are keeping it alive. The filmmakers visited a plethora of different pinball shows and tournaments where they interviewed fans, collectors and pinball designers to get the proper feel for what it is all about. The film will debut next week at the Raindance Film Festival in London and from there it will make the rounds at different international film festivals (if it shows up at Sundance perhaps I could get a chance to see it, weather, time and money permitting) before it is hopefully picked up for distribution on DVD/Blu-Ray.

It’s been a little while since we had any pinball news – I have been waiting to see what Stern’s Big Buck Hunter Pinball is supposed to be like (which I hear is their next game). But while pinball news is slow, it’s not dried up completely, as indicated by this new documentary on the man who at one time was the best pinball player in the world – Rick Stetta. The trailer below is a rough cut but it’s still worth a watch. I do not know when the film is supposed to be released but I imagine that it will be soon.
Back in December we mentioned that the highly acclaimed documentary “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” was up for pre-order. As of today, it’s now available for everyone to go buy and then enjoy. I have yet to see it but now I’ll finally have a chance to check it out. Now we just need to get Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade on DVD and our happiness will be complete.
I caught that Amazon has now listed a pre-order for the King of Kong Documentary DVD. For those that don’t know, The King of Kong documented some arcade players in their quest for the highest score at games like Donkey Kong. Now this movie has not come around without some complaints, with some saying that Billy Mitchell is portrayed as a villain but as I have not had a chance to see this yet I can’t comment on that. The DVD will be available on the 29th of January. Now if we could see a few of the other arcade-related documentaries like Chasing Ghosts on DVD too, that would be nice.
I have been away for a few days and this was a nice bit of news to hear on my return home (along with all the great news coming from IAAPA). According to GoNintendo, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is coming to DVD in the new year.
So for those of you like me that didn’t see this at the theatres, because it never saw a release in the UK, here is your chance to watch this well received documentary. I will eagerly await it’s release.
