Dave and Busters Announces the “Extreme Speed Sweepstakes”

June 9, 2010

Arcade/restaurant chain Dave and Busters has announced a new sweepstakes which can land you free D&B Power Card or even a chance to win a “three-day, two-night trip for two to either the NASCAR AAA Texas 500 or the Red Bull Motocross of Nations!” Even if you don’t care for the trip, the chance to win a Power Card with a value between $10-$250 on a daily basis seems like a good reason to try it out, assuming that there is a D&B in your area. It’s also good to see one of the few well-known arcade chains running something like this as it can always help with the messaging behind the viability of arcade games in today’s world.

Dave and Busters Ownership Changes hands in $570 million deal; new D&B opens in Roseville, CA

May 3, 2010

One of the more recognized business chains to feature coin-op games is changing hands, as the Oak Hill Capital Partners has announced that they will buy the company for $570 millionUSD. From the press release it sounds like this is happening as a way to help the company expand further in North America and beyond, in fact they just opened a new location in Roseville California today, bringing the total number of D&B locations to 57 in the US.

In lieu of the Gameworks closure recently, D&B is a perfect example of how an arcade-type location can not just survive but grow even during harsh economic climates.

UPDATE: The Roseville grand opening was a success with a report already out there that crowds gathered at the new location. Management estimated that more than 200 people were already there in the morning and that the overall reaction from customers was positive. While I haven’t seen a list posted of all the game content that they have there, we know they have two Blazing Angels and two Artic Thunders (pictured), a Big Buck Hunter or Safari, DDR, Guitar Hero, Space Invaders and Centipede. Namco's Dead Storm Pirates now testing in Illinois

December 19, 2009

(Thanks to Sam for the tip!)

If you didn’t have the chance to make it to IAAPA to check out games like Namco’s Dead Storm Pirates and you live anywhere near Addison, IL then this is for you. Namco is currently testing the game out at the Dave And Busters there for a limited time. If you go it’s worth taking a friend as this game was designed more for two player action although I did play it solo for a little bit at the show and still found it to be enjoyable.

Here’s my youtube video of the game in action, in case you missed it previously. It uses System 357 hardware and thus looks fantastic – it’s also a lot of fun too and is worth checking out.

Biz news: amusement operations up at Dave & Busters; Namco expanding in China

December 17, 2009

We’ve got a couple of arcade business related items to briefly discuss today, first off in the US, arcade/restaurant chain Dave And Busters has released it’s 3rd quarter earnings report and unfortunately for them, total revenues were down 2.1%; total food and beverages revenues were down 5.3% – however according to the report “revenues from Amusements and Other increased 1.4%“. According to the CEO of the company, “”We are encouraged that the key differentiator of the Dave & Buster’s brand, our Amusements business, has remained relatively strong during this economic downturn,” said Steve King, Chief Executive Officer. “This gives us confidence that as the economy recovers, we are well positioned to take advantage of renewed discretionary spending.” (emphasis mine). [Via Fox Business]

This is quite interesting – despite the fact that D&B’s food business is down by a few percentage points, the fact that their amusement revenues have remained strong is a testament to the appeal of coin-op gaming right now.  With more strong games coming out from different manufacturers at lower prices, it will remain strong and can be stronger as we continue to get the word out. In the case of my own arcade, this past third quarter was quite good for me once we moved and this quarter has been the best we’ve had as well although I still have a ways to go in catching up on bills. How about your own arcade business, how is it faring?

In other business news, Namco Bandai will be expanding it’s operations in China, by opening up ten new themed amusement facilities which are to be mostly attractive to kids. [Via Nikkei.co.jp]

New Dave and Busters opening in Indiana

May 21, 2009

Thdaveandbuste last time we talked about Dave and Busters, earnings were down a little bit for them and we hadn’t heard much about their plans to deal with the economy as it is. This time, we have news of a new D&B to open in Indianapolis Indiana. It’s not much in the way of news but it’s something and every new arcade that opens is a good thing in my view. I have also noticed that Indiana has been in the news a little bit when it comes to arcade-related things as we had a new large FEC open there earlier this year.
