The new fighter Dark Presence was recently shown off in public at the GarasuNoShiCon event in Ohio but we’ve been patiently waiting to see how that event took place. Galloping Ghost, who not only hosted the game but also brought along five other arcade games to the event has sent us some pictures to preview that, ahead of a video. The video will be added to this post once we get it. Until then, you can see the pictures below

Galloping Ghost Arcade open Friday night in Brookfield, IL (UPDATED with launch photos)

August 12, 2010

Right before the doors opened. Yes this is happening in 2010

The new arcade facility headed by the group developing a new arcade fighter Dark Presence will be opening it’s doors tomorrow night @ 11:59PM and judging by the video they sent us, they have managed to come a long way in getting a large number of games running to up an expansive location. They will have at least 120 games ready for the launch tomorrow, with more on the way after that and they will join several other notable locations in the US in creating what is more of a traditional “classic” arcade (i.e. little  or no redemption). They also have to deal with local laws that make coin-op pretty much illegal in the area by making the location a fee-entry only with all the games on free play inside. The video below shows more and we wish them the best of luck in their endeavors. It will also be the launch location of Dark Presence which will hopefully be ready to go by the end of the year. We’re still waiting to hear about how it’s first showing at the GarasuNoShiCon event went, they are promising to show that off soon.

UPDATE: MKII actors Philip Ahn (Shang Tsung) and Daniel Pesina (Johnny Cage) came to the Galloping Ghost Arcade and sat down to play some MKII. Here’s some of that thanks to Aaron Auzins. They also got to take a look at Dark Presence but we are still waiting to find out how showing that went. Aaron states:

“I was told in the first two hours of operation, 120 people paid for day passes to the grand opening. At 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 14, nearly 320 people had attended the arcade at some point in the day.

The arcade held its first tournament, using a Playstation 3 version of Super Street Fighter IV outfitted in a deluxe arcade setup. The free competition drew 24 competitors.

The arcade received a mix of visitors from the area, including just about every age span. One of the guests was actually Jon Klinkel, who weathered a lengthy trip from Battle Creek, Mich., to visit the arcade. Klinkel earned the number one spot on Twin Galaxies’ score record on the “Class of 1981″ fast shot version of Galaga this June.
Galloping Ghost was able to talk to him and capture a little bit of media, but I was able to see him mess around on the Galaga at the arcade, quickly amassing nearly 1 million points to show us how it could be done. Doc is currently reaching out to Twin Galaxies in order to become an official referee, so this exchange brought up a lot
of good conversation about records and competitions at the location.”

UPDATE: Aaron Auzins has sent us pictures from the opening event along with a video taken just moments after they opened. The place filled up quite fast. Expect mroe to be sent in to us as they also plan on having a special guest there soon, I’ll post updates to this post in the Twitter feed. As for the new stuff, you can see it all below

Get a look at Galloping Ghost’s Dark Presence at the upcoming GarasuNoShiCon 2010 Anime Convention

June 29, 2010

[Thanks to contributor Aaron Auzins for the info]

It’s been a long time coming but the independently made arcade fighter Dark Presence will finally be going public on July 18th at the upcoming GarasuNoShiCon 2010 event, in Perrysburg, Ohio. According to Aaron:

“…Galloping Ghost Productions will kick off the start of GarasuNoShiCon’s Sunday panels with “Independent Video Game Development” from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The team will allow attendees to get an inside look at Dark Presence by showcasing the filming and development process. Attendees will be able to talk with the team and ask question to the creator, actors and developers about the process of making an independent video game.”

This will include a small green screen setup for a demonstration along with a possible prototype cabinet. Galloping Ghost isn’t saying yet if they will have a playable build running on this cabinet (it probably depends upon how they feel about the build around the time of the event) but there is a chance that it will be a demo version with a small handful of playable characters. Most of the recent work on the game has involved audio development, which I will post some more details on after the break. To further show their arcade love (and to promote the opening of the Galloping Ghost Arcade)

GG will also be bringing some arcade cabinets for people to play, along with their vendor table. A little more on what to expect from the guests at the show can be found here. Also in case you are wondering more about what events can be found at the show(there are actually several video game related panels that will be taking place), check out Glasscitycon’s Events page here.

In case you have missed our previous coverage on Dark Presence, click here. The game is slated for a launch sometime this year. Galloping Ghost’s website is here.

If you are wondering what has been going on recently with the development of Dark Presence (with a couple more pictures) as well as the new Galloping Ghost Arcade and the challenges they have faced in opening that business, hit the break for the details.

Brief update on indie arcade titles Dark Presence and Friction

January 10, 2010

(click on the images to enlarge them)

It has been a little while since we’ve posted updates on a couple of upcoming arcade titles that are in development by a couple of independent game studios, but that does not mean that nothing is going on with these games. In fact, both games are quite close to completion and we will be featuring a closer look at both of these games very soon.

First are some new level screenshots for the arcade fighter Dark Presence by Galloping Ghost Productions. I actually had seen these a little while ago but I forgot to ask about using them for the site but since they are on Galloping Ghost’s webpage now they should be fine to use. I am quite honored by the addition of my own arcade to this level, that should be pretty cool to see in action. These shots are the level players will be on, these from the street level are for the character Trenton. All shots can be found here.

Also they have a list of arcades that will be hosting the game for a brief time on their nationwide tour. If you would like them to stop by your own arcade during the tour, the contact information is on the page I’m linking to. Check out the arcades currently on the tour here. If you have missed out on Dark Presence, I’d suggest you check out our 8th podcast where Aaron Auzins and I discuss the game in detail.

Next up is the light-gun shooter Friction. We have previously covered this game here and here, and in case you missed out on this one, give it a look. Friction is a title that has been designed with the small operator in mind so it won’t set us back much to purcahse. The screenshot you see here is from a recent build of the game that I used in a large 16-page feature article covering arcades in 2010 for Hardcore Gamer Magazine (which is probably the largest such feature to make it into a mainstream gaming magazine in years) that you can read for free here. The article features some extra info on Friction not discussed on the site previously. We are going to have much more to show you on this game soon, so stay tuned.

Arcade Heroes Podcast #8 – Discussion and new details on Dark Presence +more w/ Aaron Auzins

September 30, 2009

Here is the next podcast and joining me this week was AH contributor Aaron Auzins. Aaron had the opportunity to visit a few arcade related sites in Chicago in August and in addition to visiting the Gameworks there and checking out several great games (including the new Sega Card Gen), he also had a chance to visit Galloping Ghost studios and see what is going on darkpwith the new fighter Dark Presence. If you want to hear some interesting and exciting details on this game, download the podcast.

In addition to that we also discussed the big news items from the past couple of weeks including the SFIV update (which we have now found out will not be getting any arcade love – thanks for being jerks Capcom!), Sega Racing Classic, the JAMMA show, some pinball talk and more. It’s almost two hours worth of discussion, with most of it on Galloping Ghost and Gameworks so we hope you enjoy it!

Update on Dark Presence – now with touch screens on the panel

August 1, 2009

Galloping Ghost continues their work Dark Presence and they have added a couple of new, previously unannounced features to the game, which contributor Aaron Auzins details below.
controlpanel2_1
—————–
Doc Mack of Galloping Ghost has forwarded us an updated look at Dark
Presence’s control panel, which is now fitted with the reported 7″
touch screen monitors.

The first screen shows a view of what players will see when they are
at the controls – the action will be controlled with a joystick and
six action buttons. The positioning reflects that seen in Mortal
Kombat, splashed with a Tekken influence. There is an attack button
for each appendage – left and right arm and left and right kick – a
separate button is used for blocking and, while we have no indication
of what exactly the button will do, there is a “special” button
located off to the side. Mack also shared that the control panel has
been outfitted with one new, minor addition: Headphone jacks for each
player.

We’ve also reported on the touch screen panels before and you’ll see
them located on each side of the panel. To explain again, the touch
screen panels will be used in the game’s achievement/icon reward and
wagering system, it allows arcade owners to display messages when not
in play and it also displays character move sets, as you will see in
the concept art image provided by Galloping Ghost.
touchscreen_1

The current panel we are previewing here is actually the second
prototype developed for the title. Mack indicated the team is still
hard at work finalizing the panel and the next prototype will have two
more new features integrated into the panel. Again, many of the
cabinet features are going to be optional to arcade owners so they may
pick and choose which features will benefit their location.

We’ll have more on Dark Presence as news develops as Mack has stated
more media of the game will be on its way in the near future.

An interview with Galloping Ghost

July 15, 2009

gghost

AH contributor Aaron Auzins has done an interview with Galloping Ghost Productions (makers of the new arcade fighter Dark Presence), and has been kind enough to pass it along to us. It gets into a lot of detail about GGP as a company as well as the long development process behind their upcoming arcade fighter Dark Presence.  Since it is too large to fit the whole thing on the front page, just hit the post break to read the rest. AA will denote Aaron who is asking the questions and Doc is the head of GG who is answering them.

AA: First of all, can you tell us how Galloping Ghost originally formed?
What prompted the initial desire to produce games for the arcade
format?

Doc: I actually started Galloping Ghost back in 1994 when attempting to
make a game with many of the same features as Dark Presence, but the
technology just was not there to do all the things we wanted. The
video quality was not the greatest from the start, and most of the
software tools had to be written from scratch. We got that game
nearly complete after several years. It was fun to play, but visually
it was not up to standards, so it never was released. After a break,
we started everything over and headed back to the filming studio. We
spent close to 3 years filming all of Dark Presence and Conquering
Light. We are still a pretty small company and most of the staff has
to pull multiple duties, but that has really only made things run very
cohesively for such a large project.

Galloping Ghost relaunches site, adds more pics of Dark Presence; also launches Support Your Local Arcades effort

June 25, 2009

darkp

In March of 2008, we found out about a new arcade fighter called Dark Presence that was in development by an indie dev studio known as Galloping Ghost. We have followed the progress of this game since then and it’s been a little while since there was anything new to report until today where the developer re-launched their website and has provided more screenshots of this game, which is quite different from other fighters out there today since they have taken painstaking efforts to digitize actors into the game, much like what we saw back in the 90’s but with 1000’s of more frames and in high definition (some extra details on what this game has can be found here). We’re still waiting to see how this game looks in motion as well as how it plays but GG is promising some in-game footage soon and when the game is about ready to go they will go on a tour around the US, showcasing the game at different arcades so people can get a hand on it before release.

[New Galloping Ghost website]

In addition to the new site, Galloping Ghost is launching an effort called “Support Your Local Arcades”, where the goal is to do their part to help revitalize the industry. They actuallygalloping_ghost_supports arcades have worked hard to list all the arcades in their area onto Aurcade.com (one of the sites you can use to find an arcade near you) and the staff at GG have gone out of their way to help their local arcades where possible, which is pretty cool of them to do in my view. They actually plan on expanding this idea into something larger that more people can become involved with, so we will let you know when that happens.
