Round-up from the JAMMA show (updated)

September 17, 2009

Since I don’t have the opportunity to visit the JAMMA show in Japan, we have to rely on what other sites are showing us in regards to what is going on over there. Thanks to several Japanese game websites, here is a run down of what has been going on at JAMMA.

Sega launches a Giant Tetris website.

Namco also has launched a teaser site for Tank! Tank! Tank! in Japanese. (Image above via Gpara)

While nothing has been shown on Arcana Heart 3, two teaser pics on the Examu blog seem to indicate that AH3 may in fact be a 3D fighter. (see the Upatsu scoop post on this link)

Just so I don’t overwhelm the front page with a long post with all of these big images, you can see more by hitting the link below. And to entice you further here’s what you get: Shots of Namco’s new pirate-themed light-gun title; a card-game from Namco; H2Overdrive in Japan; Shining Force Cross and more Giant Tetris; Project Cerebus; two new and unique games from Taito; Cyber Diver, KOF Sky Stage and more. UPDATE: Pics added for Tetris: The Grand Master 4, Speed Rider, Heat Up Hockey and others via Game Watch (which was found via AM Net)

More details on Taito’s new FPS Cyber Diver

Most of the news this week seems to be revolving around Japanese releases but that’s OK – even if you don’t live in Japan some of these games could make their way to a location near you via imports or ‘official distribution’. It’s also interesting to look at trends coming along in the arcade industry no matter where they are based.

Today Taito has revealed a lot more info on their strange FPS called Cyber Diver. This game is intended as both an upgrade kit for Half-Life 2: Survivor games (which in case you did cyberdiver2not know, was Taito’s most recent entry into the arcade FPS genre) as well as a stand-alone unit that looks to offer 5-on-5 combat. The game will use Taito’s new arcade hardware called Genesys which produces some nice graphics from the looks of it but the game itself features an unusual design that combines elements of things I have seen in Halo, Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Red Steel (with the melee combat – but this also includes lightsabers) and Unreal Tournament 3. It also adds it’s own flare to it with dramatic displays that take place when you change your weapon into something else or transform your character. It’s all a bit crazy and you can see what I mean by checking out the video that is currently on the official Cyber Diver website. The game is going on location test in Japan so perhaps someone will grab some video of how it works with the cabinet here soon as well.

Taito To Bring FPS To Arcades Again

March 27, 2009

Back in 2006 Taito brought out an arcade version of the legendary game Half Life 2. This game was fairly unique as it retained the FPS sytle game play of Valve’s flagship title. This game never really seemed to make it out side of Japan unfortunately.

Will Taito’s latest attempt at an arcade FPS make it over to European and American shores? We will just have to wait and see. Cyber Diver, as it’s being currently called, is an original take on the FPS and supports 5 on 5 network play. Looking at the screen we can see guns and swords and it’s reminding me a lot of Unreal Championship 2 on the original Xbox, but with a more Japanese feel. No mention of a release date yet.

UPDATE: Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report sent us a couple of links on this game, first is the teaser site for Cyber Diver and the other is a PDF describing the game in Japanese. On top of that I took a look at the AM-Net entry of Cyber Diver and they make a note about the Half-Life 2 Survivor cabinet under this game, which hints at the probability that HL2 arcades can be converted into Cyber Divers.
