Castlevania Arcade – Video & Photos

As promised, above the video I got of Castlevania Arcade and below the pictures that I took of Konami’s new game as well as the rest of the Hollywood Bowl arcade, which is a pretty good arcade as they go. They have lots of new games like Mario Kart GP 2, Sega Rally 3 and Silent Hill Arcade (although that been there for a while now. Other games on site where Deal or No Deal, Time Crisis 3, Outrun 2, Superbikes and Let’s Go Jungle. Definitely worth a visit as there is also a VUE cinema, Pizza Hut, Nando’s and a Chimchanga in the same complex.

Castlevania Arcade – UK Location Test

I doesn’t get any better than this I tell you. I thought I’d swing by the Finchley Hollywood Bowl to play a few games and was extremely pleased to see Castlevania Arcade on test there! I’ve now played it, photographed it and videoed it, but what do I think of it?

As we know Konami have gone for an enclosed type cabinet, much like thier Silent Hill cabinet but on a grander scale. You step in to the the play area, insert a credit and pick up your wand. You are immediately reminded of the Wii, which I guess is unavoidable. You are then prompted to place you feet in the correct position, which I presume is to keep 2 players at a safe distance from each other. The usual opening game cut scene begins, not really sure what it’s trying to tell me, pretty standard then for a video game and I don’t really care anyway because I just want to play.

Enemies consisted of skelton dudes, bats and zombie type creatures and were relatively creepy looking. Like a light gun shooter you move around the various locations on rails and must defeat the enemies, but instead of shooting you are either whipping or pointing and firing blades at them. I found the whipping a little inaccurate at times, perhaps I was doing something wrong, but I found myself relying on the blades to bail me out when an enemy was about to strike.

Graphically the game looks good and there’s a nice atmosphere to it all. I quite like the way the game sets up scenes by looking around quickly at all the surrounding enemies and then taking them out one group at a time. By doing this it allows the player to roughly know what to expect. Hopefully this is an early game mechanic and gets a bit trickier later (not that I breezed through the first level myself!)

In summary the game felt a lot more polished than Silent Hill did and is definitely better than that katana game Muzan, even with it’s minor inaccuracies.

A little more on Castlevania: The Arcade Game

It will be nice when they develop transporters – then when some new game comes out in Japan I can just head over and give it a hands-on look. Of course so can everyone else at that point but that’s OK. Here is a lucky user that got some hands-on time with Konami’s new arcade installment of CastleVania, the one with the motion whip controllers that make you think of Wiimotes for obvious reasons, and it becomes even more obvious as you read about how the game plays.

From the description they give about the game it sounds a lot like Samurai Warriors Katana for the Wii where there is both slashing and shooting to be had. There is even waggling action where you have to shake Death’s stare off of you.  Enemies that are close you whip to death and those that are far away you shoot by pointing the controller at the screen to aim and then press a button on it to shoot. The game on test was set to a high level difficulty and it didn’t skimp on the monsters which I think is a good thing.

So far all the hands-on reports have been quite positive for CastleVania arcade which is more than could be said of Silent Hill. We still can’t wait to see this thing in motion but even in grainy cell phone camera stills it looks like graphically it holds up well.

A look at Konami's CastleVania Arcade game – from the inside

Ever since I first heard about the new CastleVania arcade title by Konami, I’ve wanted to see more than the outside of the cabinet and finally after a little while of waiting we have a couple of shots from inside the cabinet. Next we’ll need video but this will do for now. As seen above about it’s got a very large screen – I know that the cabinet is huge(as seen below) so it will be an attention getter. Also seen in the thumbnail to the right here are the motion-sensitive whip controllers – I wonder if the tips light up or not. With the fanbase that CastleVania has I cannot imagine this not showing up outside of Japan, we’ll just have to see how much it runs for.

The AM show (JAMMA) Mega Preview Post : Elevator Action, Razing Storm, KOFXII, Harley Davidson, CastleVania & more

There is another arcade event about to take place next week and this time it’s in Japan. Known as the AM Show, also called the JAMMA show, it brings with it a lot of information on games we’ve been hearing about for a while along with new games. It should be interesting to see what comes along over the next week but at the moment here is what we have for you as a preview of what to expect.

BTW – For interest of space, I’m just using thumbnails on this post. Click on them to expand and images taken from various sources I’ll credit at the end.

New games:

Holy frak, Taito is bringing Elevator Action back. Labeled as “Elevator Action: Death Parade” we currently have a picture of the cabinet and nothing else. Of course the cabinet has to have something which looks like an elevator door covering the screen so no clue what the game looks like but it’s not longer a joystick game but a light-gun title. The cabinet has a Too Spicy feel to it, I wonder if the game will mimick that or not.  Notice that it also has a surround sound system on it, much like those Konami cabinets are using (ex. Silent Hill, CastleVania). If this plays elevator music at certain points then this is going to be one of the coolest cabinets ever.

Taito also was showing off a new mini-game party title (I’m surprised that there aren’t more of these after the Wii came out) called Senor: The Nippon (?) and Hoppingurodo, which apparently has something to do with simulating jumping on pogo sticks.

Konami will not be at the show but they are still exhibiting games on location tests so I am sure that people will be talking about these games and they have what I think is a new fighter but the cabinet pictured shows a control scheme that is unfamiliar so it’s hard to say exactly what Brave Heroes is going to be. The game has something to do with the War of the Three Kingdoms – perhaps it’s a Dynasty Warriors style fighter (which I have always thought would make a perfect arcade title, which would have been done with the War of the Grail).

Namco has also shown off a new light-gun not based on Time Crisis (it appears) called Razing Storm. From the flyer the graphics look pretty good and it looks like it uses a bit of destructive environment geometry as well. The game is powered by System 357 (which I believe is the PlayStation 3 based hardware) and it uses a 62″ screen along with a cabinet design that sort of reminds me of Rambo.  Whether this will make it to the States or not is beyond me, I was pretty disappointed with Namco’s lack of games at AMOA but maybe as they see others gearing up they will too.

CastleVania: The Arcade Game

Konami has tested out their new CastleVania: Arcade game in Japan and it is different than the ‘medal’ version I’ve seen on AM-Net – it’s an actual video game. It uses a cabinet similar to Konami’s Silent Hill arcade game and it even uses a whip-handle shaped motion controller and a type of enclose cabinet with drapes on each side. Unlike Silent Hill Arcade, this apparently has next generation graphics (no pictures yet) which was one gripe players had about SH.

From the impressions, the person who played it had a lot of fun and called it a “total blast”. Hopefully we can get some more information on this one shortly, along with screenshots and more, so stay tuned. It’s also notable that this is another motion controller game, we had heard that there would be more of these to come this year but I was starting to wonder as we hadn’t seen anything beyond Action Deka (also by Konami).
