Video Review: Oriental Legend 2

July 30, 2008

Sorry about the lack of video reviews lately, I have been busy working on the PCs at my arcade along with trying to fix a number of problems the arcades have been having (my HOTD4 has been giving me trouble which is why I haven’t done a video of it yet; I also am working on installing Street Fighter 2: Hyper Fighting but it’s having issues with the kick buttons but there is more going on to keep me stressed). But I did manage to record something on our import game, Oriental Legend 2 the other day. Since I installed the card reader it has been receiving more attention than it did before, which I find interesting as many arcade locations in the US typically shun card readers. The video would be in HD but thanks to Vimeo turning into anti-gaming morons we can’t have game videos uploaded to that site anymore so youtube for now.

My first impressions on Oriental Legend 2

June 18, 2008

I have to keep this fairly brief as I don’t have a lot of time but Oriental Legend 2 by IGS arrived the other day and I had a chance to set it up and play it yesterday. I’ve been intrigued by this one for a while as I like beat ‘em ups/scrolling fighters and this one looked pretty good from the stuff I saw about it. After playing it for a little bit I have to say that I like it so far and even though there is some Chinese text throughout the game it’s still playable (although I don’t know what items are or what they do exactly until I use them). When you first start it up there are three options to choose from and it seems that the first two are for an adventure mode and the third one seems to be a one-on-one match tournament although I need to play it again to be absolutely sure. I haven’t set it up for the card readers yet so I can’t comment on that right now.

I like the combat because it has the complexity of a fighter with special moves you can pull off by certain button presses and joystick movements. There are also a lot of different enemies and the animation is excellent. I do wish that there was an English version so I knew what was going on in the story though.

I will try to post more later and grab some screen shots as I didn’t have time to do that yesterday since I had a lot to do (I got Carnevil working finally).

IGS to release Oriental Legend 2 on February 8th

January 19, 2008

It’s been a while since we mentioned anything about the IGS 2D beat ‘em up Oriental Legend 2, but we now learn from The Stinger Report that the kit for the game is set for a release on February 8th. There is no word on an international release at this time – if there will be, we can expect to see it come through American Alpha sometime later. In addition to this news, we also have the flyer for Oriental Legend 2, click on the thumbnails below to see the full-size versions!

I do hope that OL2 comes overseas – it’s been quite a long time since we’ve seen a 4 player 2D scrolling fighter in arcades and this game looks really cool from the videos. The website is also up-to-date but it’s all in Chinese so just click around until you figure it out.

Konami’s Action Detective Heads to location test

Since I first heard about this a month or two ago I have been eager to find out more about Konami’s new 3D action beat ‘em up title known as “Action Detective”. The game utilizes a new type of controller that doubles as a light gun and punching glove so the player will be able to shoot and punch enemies with ease. Action Detective is among the first games we can expect to see in 2008 that utilize new ideas based upon motion controls. Konami is no stranger to motion-controlled games – they released a series of ‘MoCap’ titles earlier this decade that used the technology, long before anyone knew what the Wii was. Konami will be testing Action Detective over the next week in Japan – hopefully it will do well and Konami will see it in their hearts to bring it over to Europe and the States. If it controls well then this is the sort of game that could do very well in an arcade although I imagine that people will start asking for a console port of the game in that event which as an operator I would hope doesn’t occur too soon so the arcade version could have time to make some money. Unfortunately the only screenshots I have seen so far of the game are tiny thumbnails so it appears that we will have to wait a little while to see anything of real substance on the game.

‘Action Detective’ by Konami uses new motion controls for beat ‘em up gameplay

With the AM Show over an done with, it is a little disheartening seeing all of the games that Japanese manufacturers are working on, knowing that many of them will not be released overseas. That might be the case with a new title from Konami that is currently in location testing in Japan called ‘Action Detective’.

From what little we can find out about this game, it certainly is interesting. Using what appears to be motion sensing controls, the players will be able to punch at enemies and guard against attacks using the hand controllers, as well as discharge a firearm by using a trigger built into the controls. While I hesistate to say that they might be inspired by the Wii (seeing how motion sensitive controls have existed long before Nintendo came around with them, and Konami has been one of the few manufacturers pushing such technologies in arcades for a while now), it’s hard to say that the success of that console hasn’t had any effect on thought in the arcade sector.  The game also comes with a 50″ widescreen monitor, and from the description includes driving, shooting and punching gameplay all in one (basically it’s the three of the most popular arcade genres mixed into the same game) but includes interactivity that reaches new heights thanks to the unique controllers. Personally while all we have to go off of is this picture of the game for the location test, I’m intrigued by what I see so far – it’s something unique and if it controls well it could be quite a success overseas. We’ll keep an eye on this game and Konami, if you are listening, give it an international release!
