Sega shows off more Heat Up Hockey

September 9, 2009

huh

When I posted about the innovative Heat Up Hockey game a short time ago, there was one crucial piece of information missing on the game – who was releasing it? We happen to know that now and it’s none other than Sega. Heat U Hockey changes the dynamic behind the classic game by adding a video projector that is placed perpendicular to the playfield and the game involves hitting virtual targets with the puck (as you can see in more detail by clicking on the images below). HUAH will be making an appearance at the upcoming JAMMA show in Japan.

huh2 huh3

While many games shown at shows like JAMMA will not see a general release outside of Japan, I don’t see any reason why HUH couldn’t since air hockey is a game that is universally understood by players everywhere and something like this adds an innovative angle to air hockey, enough so that I wouldn’t doubt that we’ll soon see other companies taking a crack at the same idea.

Heat Up Hockey adds a new dimension to air hockey

August 15, 2009

heatuphockey1

Of all the games I have purchased for my own arcade, one of the best investments I made was in an air hockey table. While I didn’t get anything fancy, I did get something that worked and people of all ages love it. When visiting arcade shows like ASI and AMOA, you can find several vendors showing off the latest ideas in what they are doing with the idea heatuphockey2behind air hockey and I liked tables I saw by ICE and Barron Games. But I have not seen anything quite like Heat Up Hockey, which is currently being tested in Japan.

Heat Up Hockey takes the air hockey table and adds video projection onto the playfield. Graphics that are produced by the projector will interact with the puck and players will need to hit virtual targets to score points. It’s a great idea that applies concepts that I have seen before using somewhat similar setups with robots, but it seems like combining this with air hockey goes naturally and I really hope that it will see a release in markets outside of Japan. Where players already gravitate towards air hockey, throwing a video game onto that can only heighten player interest in the game.

How’s this for an air hockey table?

February 18, 2009

What would you do if you had a 103″ plasma screen laying around? Why turn it into a touch screen air hockey game of course! At least that’s what they did in Amsterdam for ISE 2009, by combining a Panasonic 103″ plasma TV with something called the U-Touch overlay by uicentric. It would be cool to see this in an arcade although if it were me it would be under pretty strict rules and cost a bit more than regular air hockey to make sure that no one mucks with it the same way they mess with my air hockey table at times.

Then again, it’d be far less of a hassle (and less expensive) just to have a real air hockey table. 😛

Next step in the robot take over – now they can play air hockey!

June 25, 2008

I jest with the headline about the robot takeover but if you really are concerned about the evolution of robots in the world then here’s another thing for you to worry about. If not and you love technology then it’s pretty cool and shows another step for robots on the coin-op scene – robots playing air hockey, against a human opponent nonetheless. This allows for a single player match of air hockey in a sense although I wonder how well it would really handle two players with two pucks on the board or an air hockey table with a bumper in the middle. At least the robot opponent can’t reach out with another hand to stop the puck!

Another look at ASI 2008

May 8, 2008

ASI 2008 may have come and gone back in March but it’s still great when someone else shares their photos and thoughts on the the event, as Chris has done on his blog. He has some great pictures there and you’ll probably catch a few things that I didn’t put up in my ASI stuff. It sounds like he had a different experience with Primeval Hunt than I did – the guns worked out pretty well for me on the cabinet that I played it on (although I wasn’t crazy about the weight of the gun which after playing it for about a half hour starts to tire you). I didn’t play the air hockey table he has pictured but I did see it, it looks like fun.

He also has a picture of Paradise Lost. I almost beat the game today while I was waiting to talk to the salesman at my distributor and I finally had enough time for it to figure out what it lacks – theatrical flare. The hero is just some guy on an island, the bosses aren’t given “theatrical time” where they could taunt you or show off some sort of evil personality and I hate how you get into a vehicle and instead of shooting things while you move, you go to a place, stop, shoot then move. Despite it’s flaws, I was told that the deluxe version is one of the best earning games on the arcade scene right now (I played the one pictured).

Anyways, I’ll stop talking about it and let you check it out!

Rugby Air Hockey anyone?

March 5, 2008

rugby-air-hockey.jpg

Missed this one at ATEi. This isn’t just your regular air hockey table with rugby themed decals. In this game of Air Hockey the puck is actually shaped like a rugby ball! Admittedly it’s only a minor tweak to this bowling alley favourite, but I bet you it makes it a hell of a lot harder to predict where the puck is going. I might actually win a game!

Perfect timing too for the Six Nations (for those of you that aren’t familiar with this, it is a rugby tournament between England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France and Italy)
