Report from Street Fighter IV tournament @ Arcade UFO

February 27, 2010

At Arcade Heroes, we often say that there’s nothing like standing with another player and competing side by side, and arcade gaming is still the best way to do this. Technology has brought us the wonders of online gaming and voice chat, but the feeling of being able to shake your opponent’s hand at the end of a hard-fought match is something that you can’t replace. As a result, it’s great when we see other people pushing the merits of arcade competition – in this case, Jason Witmer of Accent Online. He attended last Saturday’s two-on-two Street Fighter IV tournament with a friend, and took the time to write up the experience for Accent.

The piece focuses primarily on the author’s experience of the tournament, but it covers the general themes of competitive gaming well. He mentions the anxiety prior to a match, the diversity of the competitors, the unique atmosphere of tournament play, and general sportsmanship and supportiveness of the community surrounding the game. While I’ve never competitively played Street Fighter, these are familiar to me as they are experiences which cut across all kinds of competition, be they sports, martial arts, table top games or arcade games. As a result, it’s an excellent read for anyone who is interested in competitive arcade play at any level.

Ground Kontrol presents the 1st annual Pinbrawl tournament

April 15, 2009

pinbrawl-09-poster

One of the best things about an arcade is that they give you a great place to go and compete. You don’t have to set up anything at home and worry about strangers coming into your house and unlike online tournaments, you can actually see and talk with your opponents face-to-face. So it’s a good thing that we’ve been seeing an uptick in tournament announcements that are taking place in different arcades across the country.

The latest tournament announcement comes to us from the famous Ground Kontrol Arcade in Portland Oregon. On April 19th they are going to hold a big pinball tournament where one lucky player will walk away with their own pinball machine. What machine that will be has not been announced yet (they will reveal it at the event) and players will compete on a number of GK’s 26 different pins. At $10 entry, it sounds like it’s going to be a blast of a brawl so good luck to those of you who compete! More details below after the jump.

Street Fighter IV Tournament

September 3, 2008

Capcom have announced the Street Fighter IV National Tournament. Qualifiers for the finals will be held across Japan from November 1st to December 7th. The venues for these are still to be announced, but we do know the finals will be held in Shinagawa on January 18th. Obviously it would be great to go there, but I’m sure there will be PLENTY of videos on YouTube for us to enjoy. Anyone want to take a guess and who the winners character will be?

Street Fighter IV at London’s Battle of Destiny

June 20, 2008

Battle of Destiny is a tournament for the hardcore fighting fans out there – a proving ground in which challengers compete on Hyper Street Fighter 2, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Capcom vs SNK 2 and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. The best players gain paid flights and entry to the Evolution 2008 tournament in Las Vegas. However, the event offers something for everyone as the finished arcade version of Street Fighter IV will be available to play – a first in the UK! If that wasn’t enough, Capcom will also be showing Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix, which will be released on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 later this year.

If you’re interested, the event costs £10 to enter and is taking place in The Rocket Complex at the London Metropolitan University on July 26th and 27th. Casual players pay for venue entry on the day, and if you feel like taking on the dozens of players that have already signed up for the competition, you’ll also need to register your place and bring £10-35 depending on the number of games you’re entering. For more details, visit the Battle of Destiny website.

“Caribounga!” – Play Mechanix hosting online tournament with BBHPro

June 6, 2008

[Via Betson]

Fortunately it seems that not everyone on the development side of the industry thinks that it’s all down the tubes. Take Play Mechanix for example – not only have they created a very popular game, they hold constant competitions for it and they market the game far more aggressively than any other arcade title I know of. What does this do? It brings out the players, and in one case a man drove three hours to find a place that had an online version of BBHPro for a competition, as was the case with Mr. Steve Guenther who won the Big Buck Bowl last month.

Starting tomorrow another online tournament begins with Big Buck Hunter Online, the “Caribounga!” tournament. This means that anyone can participate in the competition, as long as they play on an online enabled unit. It goes until the 27th and 52 lucky players will walk away winners. Hit the post break for the full press release.

Reminder: ASI 2008 this week in Vegas

March 24, 2008

asi08.png

The UK had ATEI, Japan had AOU and now the US is going to have ASI. Known as the Amusement Showcase International, ASI is held every year in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA and in addition to lectures for operators to help them improve their business, we’ll also get to see the latest arcade titles that are already on the scene or will be headed to the scene later this year. You might have noticed that over the past few days we’ve seen more announcements of new games coming along and a lot of that has to do with publishers gearing up for the show.

As a reminder for anyone interested in going, this Saturday the show will open to the public for four hours so everyone can get a chance to come in and check out the new games. They also will be holding two big tournaments “one for the public and one for celebrities – and a raffle benefiting the American Amusement Machine Charitable Foundation, for six unbelievable prizes, including the iPhone, a Panasonic Wireless Home Theater System and Global VR’s EA Sports™ Nascar® Racing game.”

I only live about 7 hours away from Vegas by car but unfortunately I won’t be able to make it this year due to certain financial circumstances. But that won’t stop us from reporting any news that we come across that spills out of the show so stay tuned as the week progresses.
