May 16, 2010

Earlier this month, a large Japanese King of Fighters tournament was held, taking in classics such as KOF2002UM and KOF98. However, the big point of attraction was a special preview tournament for the upcoming King of Fighters XIII! Top players were given the chance to battle it out on the latest entry in SNK’s classic series. Check out a video of the finals below!

SNK Neo Geo 20th anniversary T-shirt

February 16, 2010

If you’re familiar with Japanese video game merchandise, you might well have heard of the clothing company Mars16. They’ve been responsible for some very tasty Sega AGES 2500 tie-in stuff in the past, and lately they’ve started doing some SNK T-shirts too. While the previous two have focused on the company’s iconic fighting series Samurai Spirits and The King of Fighters, the third SNK-related design celebrates the 20th anniversary of the legendary Neo Geo MVS hardware. The front shows an MVS cabinet, while the back appears to list every game from the machine’s debut in 1990 to the final release, Samuarai Spirits Zero Special in 2004. As with much of Mars16’s work, this is lovely, stylish stuff. It’s also a pain to get hold of if you’re not in Japan, so you might want to collar a friend with a Japanese address and get them to take a delivery!

Video of KOFXII Japanese location test

December 22, 2008

All I can say is man this game looks beautiful. I don’t care if it doesn’t use 3D, in fact I appreciate the 2D art (and game style when it comes to fighters) much more. The video speaks for itself below, uploaded by youtube user wx1682

Samurai Spirits Sen and KOF98 Ultimate Match now available

August 4, 2008

Fighter fans can now rejoice – two new fighters are now available for purchase, through at least two importing companies that I know of (and probably more), Legend Trading Company (update: I just noticed that the link isn’t working although this is the one I got in the e-mail, maybe the site is down at the moment?) and Coinopexpress. The prices on both games are different between these two companies but Samurai Spirits Sen is going for $3,500 to $3,700 if you get it with the hardware (just the software runs for about $1000 less) and KOF98:UM is going for between $1300 to $2700 respectively, with the software going for much less. If you’re out of the loop, Samurai Spirits Sen is the latest entry in the Samurai Shodown series and is in 3D, KOF98:UM is KOF98 with some enhancements in graphics, new fighters and new moves and was made to celebrate KOF98’s 10th anniversary.

Video of Samurai Spirits Sen @ GDC08

July 4, 2008

For as many things as we are able to find out about arcades around the net, sometimes a game or announcement slips under our radar. Fortunately it’s not for forever so you’ll have to forgive us that we bringing this up now but below is a video taken from GDC’08 of the upcoming 3D rendition of Samurai Spirits Sen (or Samurai Shodown: Edge of Destiny) for arcades. Come to think of it, I believe that we mentioned this one back in February but I admit that I forgot about it until today. It looks bloody awesome (literally) but obviously it is only for venues that can carry red labeled games due to it’s graphic content. I’m not sure when it is supposed to be released or in what regions exactly but where it was shown at GDC, I hope that it would be on the table for an international release this year. The game uses the Taito TypeX2 hardware but whether or not it will live up to the name (as the last effort that this game made into 3D was shunned by many) remains to be seen. Also tacked on is a second video that was on Gametrailers from about the same time as the first. I’ve been so used to sites like GT rarely carrying something arcade related (unless it’s SFIV) that I stopped checking (I used to check it for console stuff but it’s been a while as I just don’t have the time for consoles right now).

King of Fighters XII

King of Fighters XII has whipped up a wave of excitement as of late, with a recent poll suggesting that our fine readers are looking forward to it more than any other fighting game, even Street Fighter IV. Part of this is down to a stunning trailer released at AOU which showcased the new high resolution 2D graphics, which arrive as part of the first complete King of Fighters sprite redraw since KOF 96. Anyhow, a bunch of screenshots of this loveliness recently surfaced at Famitsu, so don’t delay in clicking that link!

While many gamers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of SNK’s KOF XII, SNK is releasing another KOF game in a few weeks, the remake of KOF98, known as KOF98 Ultimate Match. An official site has been created for the game which includes a number of scree caps and a video of part of the new attract mode. While we haven’t heard about an official release of this game for markets outside Japan, Coinopexpress will be carrying the game after March 31st. Check out the site by hitting the link below.
