Sequel to Sea Wolf at IAAPA – Sea Wolf: The Next Mission

When I was at ASI earlier this year, there wasn’t a lot of new content around but there were a few pleasant surprises. The video/redemption game Sea Wolf was one of them as it’s old school gameplay with new graphics was a lot of fun and both my brother and I ended up playing this title several times during our short stay in Vegas. In case you are not familiar with Sea Wolf, it was originally a Midway title from 1976 where you torpedoed passing enemy ships and you used a periscope to view the action; the remake held some changes in the cabinet design but gameplay wise it was essentially the same. While fun, it did have the problem of not containing a lot of depth for those accustomed to such things these days but the new version promises to address that with 7 missions to play (instead of no ‘missions’ at all). To describe it further, Coastal Amusements said the following:

As the player advances, each mission becomes increasing more difficult.  Enemy ships lay mines and return fire and enemy planes drop torpedoes, all in an effort to sink the Sea Wolf.

The new Sea Wolf requires more strategy from the player, and has much more depth to hold the players’ interest.

They also will be releasing the game in three different configurations this time around – the standard sitdown (which the release earlier this year used) and two upright designs with 26″ or 32″ LCD screens. The controller appears to be the same on each design and it’s good to see artwork plastered over most of the cabinet. Now we’ll just have to see what the prices are for each unit; last time it seemed like they priced it in the same field as redemption titles (it can work as video only, which is why we’re covering it). In case you’re going to make it to IAAPA, you can catch the new Sea Wolf at booth 1624.

Shaggy’s Review – Sea Wolf by Coastal Amusements

I am going to try and review all the games I had a chance to play at ASI over the next few weeks – just as long as I can find the time to write all of my thoughts down. This week we’ll start off easy with Sea Wolf and go from there.

Sea Wolf by Coastal Amusements, original by Midway

Introduction

While classic game remakes are all the rage these days on the consoles through services like Xbox Live Arcade, actual arcades have seen very few remakes over the past decade or two, until Coastal Amusements came along with a new 3D remake of Sea Wolf. Originally designed as a redemption only game, it has proven that it can stand on its own legs as a video title as well thanks to it’s “easy to learn, difficult to master” style gameplay that we all loved in retro arcades.

Game Mechanics

The objective of the game is simple – you are a submarine and it is your job to sink as many ships as appear on your screen (designed to look like a periscope although the cabinet differs quite a bit from the original Sea Wolf design which made you look into a periscope-like device while standing up) by launching torpedoes at your enemies, all within a preset time limit. The target ships will appear on the right or left side of the screen and will sail across at varying speeds, with faster boats being worth the most points. Depending on how far away the ships are, you will need to time your shots just right to take them down but rarely will you get a one hit kill, with many ships needing two or three shots to be sunk completely. If a ship survives the first hit, it will set on fire and slow down, making it easier to hit it again although you have to wait a brief moment to reload. There are five “tubes” to fire torpedoes from, each corresponding with a line drawn on a second screen below the main view. These will fire in preset directions so the game is about lining up a shot and taking it at the right time. While you cannot die in the game you can run out of torpedoes before the timer hits its mark, so it is wise to not just fire madly into the ocean hoping to hit something by pure chance. One thing that the new version seems to be missing are the mines which can block your shots which was in the original, but otherwise everything is there that I know of.

Videos from ASI 2008

In addition to a few pictures I also managed to get some video footage from the ASI 2008 show floor. As mentioned in previous posts I have had some problems with my digital camera corrupting many files so unfortunately some videos aren’t loading into my computer and I can’t get them to work but I am looking into a workaround at salvaging a few.

Indiana Jones Pinball @ Stern’s booth – this is a lot of fun and it was quite popular.

GlobalVR’s Booth. 10 NASCAR games linked = good fun

Sega’s Booth. I forgot to mention in the video that with Primeval Hunt it is very easy to see the influence that the Wii has had on this game – the guns use some sort of motion sensing control (which I believe works most when the touch screen is deactivated) and it also has a small speaker in the butt of the gun. It’s cool but whatever they did made the gun weigh more than it should and by the time you’re finished with the game your arms are tired.

ASI 2008 – my view (part 2)

Continuing on with my ASI 2008 coverage is a continued look into products that one could find at the show.

Coastal Amusements had their new Sea Wolf game on display which received a lot of attention(they also had a number of redemption games there too). They had six units setup that were constantly being played and I could tell why – it is a very fun game. The gameplay is quite simple like a classic game – the only thing I don’t like about it is the price tag which I guess in the redemption sector is where they’d like it but for the video sector is a little high. A video of this is coming up in a post later today.

Trio-Tech had their UFO Stomper on display (which I also have a video of) along with their Motion Wave Theater and Jett Rider. UFO Stomper is a lot of fun with many mini-games built into the unit that really can give you a work out. It was fairly popular from what I saw and I wore myself out going through the adventure mode. You might be able to find this at an FEC but for a couple of reasons (size and price) it is impractical for small locations. Great attraction though. I was hoping to see a Wasteland Racer there but it looks like they have dumped it (as it even isn’t on their website).

Andamiro had three Pump It Up games setup – all looked quite nice and I saw people playing them everytime I walked past the booth. They also had a fun video redemptionphto0002.jpg game called Hammer 2 where the players use soft mallets to smack video images on the table, sort of like whack-a-mole but more advanced. It was some nice fun for two players.

Beyond that the floor featured many redemption items and a few touchscreen devices, including new tabletPC-like models from Touch Tunes (pictured) and Merit. There also were a number of air hockey tables on the floor, each with some new ideas that mostly involved sound. My brother and I played a coupletouchtunes.jpg of games at the Barron Games booth, including a match where you could have four players to a table or each player could “dual-wield” (OK, my term, not theirs) the hockey puck deflectors. It also had a bumper in the middle of the field. I saw another air hockey table(it might have been at the ICE booth) that had a shield in the middle to avoid flying pucks and also used some new ideas with sound. It had been a long time since I had played air hockey, I forgot how fun it could be so I will have to look into one of these for my own arcade.

While it’s not a game, I did come across a booth where they were demonstrating some LCD monitors to go into standard arcade cabinets. The monitors were made by Ally Star Technologies in Taiwan and overall I liked the quality of what I saw. They had several sizes of monitors and most on display had a widescreen display ratio and good contrast ratios and options. They make screens from 8.4″ in size to 47″, each size improving in technical specs (the 47″ screen can do 1080p). I am thinking about one of these widescreen displays for my conversion of a cabinet into The Act – the actual model that Cecropia made had an LCD widescreen monitor so I’d like to get something like it.

Finally I did come across one new development in the redemption sector that is interesting. It takes the self-redemption concept to the level of not needing employees at a desk to count tickets and grab prizes for people. Called the Database Prize Center by Smart Industries, the redemption counter is basically transformed into some cabinets where the prizes have the value printed on a sticker – the person feeds their tickets into the machine and it lets them choose what they want (as long as they have the tickets to afford the item). It does essentially replace redemption arcade employees with machines but there are some types of locations that may not want to run a redemption desk or can’t do it at all that this is useful for. If it grows (initial reports state that it’s already proven to work successfully in a number of different venues) it could become a standard thing in the industry so I thought that it was worth mentioning.

So that was ASI in a nutshell. Today they are having the show open to the public and we’ll see how that goes and what people think of the offerings there. I also stopped by The Star Trek Experience at the Hilton hotel – for a Trekkie like myself it was awesome. I even bought a “KHAAANN!” t-shirt which looks great. Stay tuned for some ASI videos!

Sega ATEi 2008 Impressions

Let’s start with the big guns, first up is Sega.

The first thing that struck me was the variety of games on offer especially after the recent news that Sega had signed a distribution deal with Trio-Tech. This added some additional games to the blue hedgehog’s stand. Jett Rider and Mad Wave, both simulators, were present as well as UFO Stomper, which we are all familiar with now after it was shown at IAAPA recently. The best game on the Stomper had to be thier take on the Guitar Hero gameplay system, but instead of a guitar, you were using your feet to hit the notes. Other 3rd party games on offer were Coastal Amusements Sea Wolf which was good fun and surprisingly holds up well on it’s own as a video game.

Back to the real video games now and my favourite on the Sega stand had to be Race TV. I’m not so convinced by the single player game, but as always, when it comes to multiplayer Sega knows what it’s doing. In some ways it’s cheap, but the boost system works well in helping you catch up with your rivals. Also, if timed correctly, the boost allows you to smash in to the back of opponents and take them out. The tracks are also incredibly wacky and theres a good selection of licensed cars which is unique for a game like this.

Primeval Hunt impressed me too because it would be so easy for Sega to churn out another run of the mill shooter and for it to do well. But that’s not what they’ve done. The main innovation in this game is the fact that it is set in a free roaming environment and you control your path using a touch screen placed near the gun holsters. It is possible for you to plan out your entire path at the start of the round, this allows you to take out the dinos in a quicker time. Each dino has a vital hit point too, which is pointed out to you at the beginning of the round. Hitting these point brings down the creatures in one shot which is particularly handy when they are charging straight at you! Also they are three choices of weapon, that I saw, and these were; crossbow, shotgun, and rifle which all have the own strengths and weaknesses.

Sea Wolf improved upon, released

We’ve see the videos and the pictures of Sea Wolf by Coastal Amusements and it was quite a popular game at IAAPA 2007 so all we have been waiting for is a release announcement. Well Sea Wolf is finally here and it has brought some improvements along with it. While originally it was intended as a redemption only game, the reaction they received at IAAPA led them to modify the software so that it can be used solely as a video game if the operator wishes. They also have modified the cabinet with some extra lighting on the seat, edge glow plexiglass and lighted fire buttons. Whether or not the pre-announced price of $7500 will change (we could hope that it would go lower but that isn’t likely) but it’s great to see an new company join the relatively small collective of arcade developers out there and to bring something a little different to the table on top of that.
