A look back at JAMMA 1986

January 8, 2009

replay86GameSetWatch posted a very interesting arcade article today they call “The RePlay Files: A Trip to the 1986 JAMMA Arcade Game Show”. JAMMA is still held in Japan every year, but it’s always cool to take a look back at what it was like ‘back in the day’. 1986 would be two years after the video game market crash in the US, which crash didn’t affect Japan really due to the way the markets worked at the time. Of special interest to Sega fans, this is the show where Sega introduced OutRun to the market and as you’ll read in the article, the game caught quite a bit of attention there, which was a sign of things to come for the rest of arcades. The article we’re linking to is part I, they will be posting a second part shortly which takes a look at more of the games seen at the show which is sure to induce some kind of nostalgia for any of us who played some of these games from the late 80’s.

The info comes from the arcade trade magazine RePlay, which is still going strong today and is one of the magazines worth picking up if you’re interested in getting into the arcade business. Hit the link below for the article.

Outrun Online Arcade coming to XBLA & PSN

December 19, 2008

Great news for Outrun lovers. Sega’s classic racer is coming to XBLA and PSN in early 2009. From the above video it looks like we will be getting a similar game to the original xbox home conversion of Outrun 2.

Hopefully this game will do better than the xbox version. Obviously I’m not talking about critical success, more retail. It may have sold OK, but there were never many people playing it online. Now that xbox live has even more members and the fact this is sure to be cheaper as it’s download game, we may see a lot more people playing it. I, myself , can’t wait to battle it out against the worlds best on my favourite arcade racer!

Kawasaki Warehouse – Location Report, Japan

October 17, 2008

Wow, I have just got back from Japan and made a fabulous discovery whilst I was there:

Kawasaki Warehouse

This incredible arcade has been built from the ground up to look like a disused, run-down warehouse complete with rusting doors and peeling paint but is in fact a fantastic site with some great games. The site has some neat touches like the front doors that appear to be rusted shut but open when you approach to reveal a red tunnel which looks like a bit passageway to hell. As you approach the second door you are blasted by a smoke machine. Inside the lighting is great (dim but really asmospheric) and flickering neon signs and faded posters cover the walls. The site is over several floors with Bingo (!!!), an arcade and a Darts bar. I have to say I only had a couple of hours free and never left the arcade floor itself.

Amongst the highlights were:

Original Retro cabinets  (All in great working order)

  • Street Fighter
  • Virtua Racing Twin
  • Outrun DLX
  • Hang On
  • Super Hang On
  • Pro Monaco GP
  • After Burner DLX
  • Space Harrier DLX
  • Darius
  • Gauntlet 4 Player
  • Rad Mobile DLX
  • About a dozen cocktail cabinets
  • Daytona 2 (4 Player)
  • Virtua On (Loved this on the Dreamcast)

In addition I got to play some great recent and new games:

  • Street Fighter 4 (Got my ass kicked at least 20 times by some guy!)
  • JuBeat – Really interesting game and very funky cabinet
  • Afterburner DLX (Played it before but never linked)
  • Halflife Survivor (Just couldn’t get used to the controls)
  • Initial D 4 (Good fun!)

If you get the chance I really recommend setting aside a couple of hours and heading over there. It is about 10 minutes walk from Kawasaki train station.

OutRun 2 SP Super Deluxe “Officially available” in the US

June 2, 2007

Sega Amusements USA has updated their website with a press release about the new Outrun game, OutRun 2 SPX and has announced that it is in the pre-sale phase which means that distributors should have their hands on the game shortly and then on to big arcades. So far this game has received nothing but rave reviews and here at Arcade Heroes we’ve had a few words and videos to post about it as well. Hopefully an arcade near you will carry the game and if they do, take a friend along as this is certainly another title that will shine with co-op play.
