Jerad’s Choice BBH Online Tourney

November 12, 2008

Sorry about the lack of updates the past few days – I’ve been busy, busy ,busy with the arcade and other things in life. It seems like when one machine breaks down they all decide to take a trip with it. I can just say at least most machines carry a 1 year warranty. Those that don’t deserve harsh criticism (90 days, are you flippin’ kidding me?) but that’s a fun subject for a later time.

Right now, BBH Online players have another tournament to look forward to, called Jerad’s Choice. Jerad Berg jerad_screenis the winner of the recent BBH World Championship and he has picked his own tourney to hold for November. Like usual, all you need to do is find a BBH Online machine and give it a ‘shot’ (har har) in the online tournament mode and you have a chance at winning $500, with additional payouts in smaller amounts going out to the other 99 placers. So your chance of winning something at the very least is quite good! Hit the post break for more information on the tourney from the press release. In the meantime, I know that we can expect to hear about Big Buck Safari Online tournaments shortly, so stay tuned.

Outcome from the Big Buck Hunter Pro World Championship

October 31, 2008

I meant to get to this a couple of days ago but unfortunately I’ve been a little tied up and there is a lot of news to post all of the sudden. But that’s all right, a lot of news is better than little or no news.

As you know, the Big Buck Hunter 2008 World Championship took place back on Oct. 18th and it sounds like it was a blast to witness. It was a double elimination tournament and in the end it came down to two players, Dan Mundschau and Jerad Berg. As the press release states, it was a very close (and thus exciting) match, catch the full rundown on the event after the break (along with extra pictures).

Celebrity Pinball Tournament & Arcade Show 2008

September 6, 2008

There are fundraisers which use expensive dinners to bring people in and then there are fundraisers which use games! This is the latter and not just any games are involved in this fundraiser for curing Autism but they are bringing people in by using Pinball and arcade games, along with some celebrities (including the LA Lakers Girls). The show is being held in Inglewood, CA on Sep. 12th-14th. The actual tournament will be used with pinball machines while there will be “100’s” of arcade games set on free play to sweeten the deal.

If anyone gets a chance to go, send us some pictures and impressions!

Silver Strike Bowling Championship results

July 15, 2008

One way to get players out to the arcade is to hold a tournament of sorts – get several people signed up, offer a cash prize, etc. While operators can only do this on a limited basis, some manufacturers are holding national tournaments with big prizes to get people out and play. A fine example of this is the recent national tournament held with Incredible Technologies Silver Strike Bowling 2009. In a rather lengthy press release, the story is told of the 32 qualifiers who made it to the Vegas tournament out of the many hundreds of people that played the game. According to the press release “Over 1 million online games were played on nearly 10,000 Silver Strike Machines by players attempting to qualify for the live finals in Vegas.” Any way you look at it, that is quite good for an arcade game to have that many online games played on it and the fact that SSB09 already has nearly 10,000 machines online across the country (the game only came out a short time ago) is impressive as well.

As I mentioned, the following release (check it out after the post break where you’ll also find pictures from the event) is rather lengthy but tells the story of what went down in Vegas (which isn’t staying in Vegas in this case :P), from the beginning where it started out with 32 players vying for the prize to the last round with Dan and Mike. The story about Mike “Schmagwag” Cornwell (pictured to the left with his $10,000 prize), the new SSB Champion is intriguing and emotional and worth a read – his family was among the many who were recently devastated by the floods in Iowa, so for him to win the $10,000 prize was even more important. Congrats to Mike! [Incredible Technologies] [Discuss on the Forum]

Silver Strike Bowling 2009 National Championship begins

April 16, 2008

In what is considered to be the largest video bowling tournament ever, qualifying for the Silver Strike Bowling National Championship has begun today, with $100,000 in total prizes on the line. With the potential for 800 winners, this gives a lot of people a chance at winning a cash prize from IT and on top of that if one is good enough(and plays enough) you can make it to the Regional Leaderboards and maybe a trip to Vegas for one final showdown. From the SSB Championship page:

Capped off by a 32-person event at the Kingpin Suite of the Palms Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas, the National Championship will captivate, enthrall and fuel players across the country as they try to strike and spare their way to stardom.

And what’s at stake is nothing less than immortality. Eight bowlers from four regions will prove through a six-week qualifier that they have the skill and determination to be called a champion. They’ll receive a trip to Las Vegas, Silver Strike Bowling apparel and gear, invitations to exclusive parties and at least a $1,000 slice of the $100,000 purse – one of the largest prize pots in video game history!

Keep in mind that this is only for SSB2009 and not the previous version 07 and you need to get an SSB players card so you have an ID to follow, which the game will ask for if you select the Bowler’s Menu in the game. Cards should be sold by the operator that has the game and I believe you can also buy them direct from IT, but I’m not sure how. The qualifying event ends on May 31st and to qualify you need to play 100 games. It’s too bad that I’m still not open yet with my arcade like I should be, as I’d jump on this in a heartbeat as an operator. The site below has more details and also national leaderboards.

Reminder – Rochester Game Room Show this weekend

April 10, 2008

This is just a friendly reminder that the Rochester, NY Game Room Show will be happening this weekend. I have been busy getting ready for the show! I will be there and will have plenty of pictures and video to report back with after the show.

The show will feature a new fleamarket area, games available for purchase and for free play and everything you need for your home gameroom or arcade! 12$ admission at the door (its a cheap price for the amount of games they have to play!).

One planet under pinball article about Pinball championships in Vegas

April 1, 2008

One thing I missed while at ASI was the IFPA Pinball Championships that were held in conjunction with the ASI show in Las Vegas this past weekend although I did see at least two people there for the championship as they had Rio Pinball Clube shirts on from Brazil (I’ve mentioned their website before) and were talking in Portuguese.

So how did it all go? The Las Vegas Sun comments not only the Championship but on the state of pinball and how players feel about it in current times. It’s a pretty good article that shows how some of us still have a good outlook on pinball despite the fact that it is not the fad that it once was. I believe that it will take more kids getting hooked on the game to increase the base of players as well as interest but that can be difficult in these times as some just don’t get it.

Golden Tee 2009 Design-A-Hole Contest

March 26, 2008

When it comes to sports arcade games, no other game has as much recognition or asgtcontest.jpg many releases as Golden Tee as they have released a GT title every year since 1989. Incredible Technologies has already begun work on the next GT game of course, GT2009 and this year to celebrate the games’ 20th anniversary they are holding a contest where you have the chance to design one of the holes that will be used in the game. Anyone can submit their ideas for a GT hole anytime between now (it actually started on March 14th) and April 15th. Entries will be judged by Golden Tee creators Jim Zielinski and Larry Hodgson who will pick three of the most creative holes that also blend challenge along with the creator’s own signature into them and present the three finalists for an online vote that will take place on Goldentee.com on May 1st-15th. To increase the chances of winning the site offers these suggestions:

  • Your idea will be judged overall on its creativity. A good design should be challenging, not frustrating; clever, not crazy; and most importantly entertaining. Show us what you’ve got!
  • Any Par 3, 4 or 5 hole is eligible.
  • There is no limit to the amount of ideas you can submit. Just make ’em good.
  • The creativity of your submission counts too! From the back of a bar napkin to a polished video on YouTube, you’re encouraged to “think big” to get your idea across. The easier you can impart your vision to Jim and Larry, the better your odds on becoming a finalist.
  • A creative name for your design is also a necessary ingredient for success. Without a name, DaVinci’s Mona Lisa would just be “some chick” from the Italian Renaissance!

I really like this idea, although I’m not one that knows much about golf. Good luck to those who give it a shot!

IFPA's March Pinball Madness

March 13, 2008

ifpalogo.jpg

One of the competitions to be featured in conjunction with this year’s ASI event is the International Flipper Pinball Association’s World Pinball Championship. The tournament will be taking place at the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas on March 28th-30th and willifpa5.jpg be offering a prize package of over $14,000 along with a brand new pinball machine from Stern. Competitors will be coming from 12 different countries to compete and spectator’s are welcome.

While a lot of kids these days probably wouldn’t understand the appeal of watching people compete in pinball tournaments, I think it would be great to watch some of the best players in the world duke it out. There is always something cool about watching someone play a pinball or arcade game when they are really good at it.
