Another review double feature: Chase HQ2 & 1942

July 13, 2008

I’ve got another couple of reviews uploaded to the internet, this time Chase HQ2 by Taito and 1942 by Romstar/Capcom. I uploaded the CHQ2 video to Vimeo and 1942 to youtube for the time being and when I get a chance (i.e. more time as it takes a while to upload a 200MB file) I’ll put CHQ2 up on youtube. I did forget to mention one other gripe about Chase HQ2 – the high score entry screen is too difficult for many people to input their names due to over-sensitivity of the wheel. In case anyone at Taito/Namco reads this, it would be really nice if an update was released for the game to address a couple of these issues I bring up, such as fixing the high score thing and adding some more levels to the game which could also round out the difficulty curve for players. I still maintain that it’s a fun game and I’d like to try it linked one day but my budget can’t handle any new game purchases for a while.

London Preview 08 Part 3 – Stinger looks at GlobalVR, Taito and IT

October 12, 2007

For our final piece of coverage on the London 08 preview (again thanks to The Stinger Report for the news and pictures), we look at what GlobalVR, Taito and IT had to show off at the event.

GlobalVR – GVR was represented by their European distributor Cosmic Video Amusement. Here was a first look at GVR’s EA NASCAR Racing. The deluxe cabinet was at the show and provided “intense and compelling graphics and action.” Nascar will go on test in the UK soon, with special featuers such as “drafting”, making for a great two-player racing title.

America’s Army was also available, we posted impressions on the game recently and Stinger reports that the game provides a “unique experience that could be placed in bars as well as conventional amusement locations.”

Aliens : Extermination Deluxe and Paradise Lost were also at the show and both games have proved to be popular games in the market. With recent price reductions on all GVR games, the company has caused a stir in the amusement industry .

Taito -Being represented by distributor Electrocoin, Taito was represented on the floor with their latest racer, Chase HQ 2. For the first time the deluxe cabinet was shown, along with two other versions of the game. It looks great and offers something a little different as well.

Incredible Technologies – Electrocoin alsohad some games on hand from IT, including Silver Strike Bowling , Golden Tee Live 2008 and the aptly named ‘Bags‘ game.

Also from the Stinger:

The event boded well for ATEI in January, though there is expected to be some more big surprise with Tekken 6, a brand new racing game and a selection of hardcore titles from Konami (absent from Preview this year). For more detail on what was at Preview we would recommend reading our The Stinger Report coverage at the end of the month.

We’ll be sure to cover that as well.

Our thoughts – It looks like 2008 is shaping up to be a good year for arcades as well although it is concerning about the genre crowding that is occurring. Games like Primeval Hunt look like a good start (as was 2Spicy, which seems as though it won’t appear here in the States), as does that Panzer Simulator game. But for the industry to continue its stride and to become more competitive against the console market, we’ll need more new ideas of experiences that just aren’t as fun at home – while maintaining reasonable prices of course. Thanks again to The Stinger Report for the coverage.

The Stinger Report – UK Distributors at Open-Day Meetings

July 27, 2007

stinger.gif

The latest Stinger Report covers the gatherings of UK amusement distributors at recent events such as the Park Avenue Open-Day and BAR.07, both held in London.  A number of popular games were available, including most of Incredible Technologies offerings (minus Golden Tee LIVE 2008). Surprisingly IT brought along the European version of ‘Target Toss Pro: Bags’ which has been renamed simply to ‘BAGS’ for the aforementioned market. They also demonstrated the modified European version of ‘Silver Strike 2007 Bowler’s Club’ which includes a Tournament feature and the same distributor for IT products, Electrocoin also demonstrated the first production upright units for ‘Chase HQ 2’.

Among other news in the Stinger Report for today, they also report that Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer Arcade Championship’ is running into some trouble. A direct quote from The Stinger Report:

However TSR has learned that licensing issues regarding the soccer teams and players represented in the amusement version has meant that plans to release the arcade version has been suspended for an undefined period meaning no deployment of the e-AMUSEMENT system in the UK – this could mean that it will miss a 2007 release window – TSR awaits a official statement on the arcade game’s status.

Hopefully Konami can sort those issues out before the end of the year.

Chase HQ 2 coming soon (to the States)!

July 7, 2007

BHM Vending has posted Chase HQ 2 on their site with a listing price of $8000. Whilenamco_chase_hq.jpg they don’t list any other details it’s good to know that it will be headed to the US considering that I don’t recall reading anything about it headed our way. Am-Net says it’s supposed to be out in Japan in August and with this entry already on BHM Vending’s webpage perhaps we’ll see it next month. I was a little surprised to see this as it seems that some distributors don’t carry Taito games anymore and but it looks as though Namco will be distributing the game.  Click on the image above to see the cabinet in higher resolution.

UPDATE: Thanks for the corrections editor. This game is already available in Europe and is being distributed by Namco in the States.

Taito Shows Off Upcoming Titles in Japan

June 29, 2007

Taito has held a showing in Japan of some arcade titles and fortunately some news has trickled out about their upcoming releases. Unfortunately we do not know when or if these games will be released outside of Japan. Thanks to Am-Net however, we have some information regarding Taito’s upcoming arcade releases along with some pictures. Click on the images to enlarge.

Chase H.Q. 2 – Current release set for December 2007. Price listed at around $5,500 USD (using current exchange rates)

King of Fighters MI Reg. A is still on for July 13th. It is only listed as a kit and not a dedicated cabinet, and from the show pictures it looks like it uses the same cabinet that they created for Battle Fantasia. Hopefully this will be made available outside of Japan soon after that release.

Half-Life 2 Survivor is listed for a November 2007 release and will be available in Deluxe and Standard configurations. Click here for the official Half-Life 2 arcade page (Japanese). It would be interesting to know if Taito plans on bringing this title overseas or not, if the game is designed differently enough from the PC version it would probably do fairly well. Using current exchange rates the Deluxe cabinet is valued around $10,000 USD. They will be location testing HL2: Survivor during the middle of July in Japan.

Chase H.Q. 2 Video from ATEI 2007

And finally Chase H.Q. 2 from Taito’s ATEI 2007 stand.

Not that much to tell really, seeing as all that was on the Taito stand was Chase HQ 2 and Kings of the Jurassic. Not much has changed since the last time I played Chase at the Trocadero. They have added more tracks, but graphically it is still the same. Thats not to say that they are bad, I am quite keen on the cel shaded style of the cars. Kings of the Jurassic is basically Taito’s take on the card battling games. To be honest it was very similar to Sega’s Dinosaur King except instead of swiping the barcode you put the card in to a slot. The stand was pretty cool as they had some mad art work on the pillars, check out the pictures.
