Sega's Giant Tetris gets a new, slightly-less-giant cabinet; HUMMER MDX released

One of the nicer game surprises in recent memory was Sega’s release of Giant Tetris(or Tetris Giant – it can go either way) – Tetris with huge joysticks and giant blocks. The game could project a screen of up to 150″ and it was good fun – but it was a $10,000 game which for Tetris (which is available on almost everything that can play games) just seemed a bit too high, even with the funky controls and screen size. But Sega has decided to rectify that on some level, with a new Giant Tetris cabinet that ditches the projector in favor of a 47″ LCD screen and a slightly lower price. At the moment only one distributor, BMI Gaming, is listing the game for sale at a price of $7975 and a release date of October 2010. It’s great to see that Sega hasn’t given up on pushing a puzzle game in today’s arcade market.

So what are your thoughts? Good move on Sega’s part? Do you feel that the price is right? Any thoughts on the new, stylish cabinet?

You can read previous coverage of Giant Tetris here(IAAPA 09) and here(initial announcement)

Also in Sega arcade news, BMI is listing the dual-racer HUMMER MDX Mini-motion as available this month. This was seen at Amusement Expo 2010, it makes for a slightly different racing experience since it’s primarily intended for co-op play. Here’s Sega’s booth from Amusement Expo 2010 where you can see both Giant Tetris (in the deluxe cabinet) and Hummer MDX in action.

I think more operators may go for this as not only was the price too high but it took a lot of space too. To be honest even thug I find it a bit gimmicky I would like to try giant tetris just to see what it’s like to play and the smaller cabinet looks a lot nicer. If this proves popular I wouldn’t be surprised if they released others like columns or taito releasing a giant bust a move LOL are there actually any giant tetris out in arcades anywhere preferably in the uk?
