A Chuck E. Cheese "Entertrainment" video

September 25, 2009

If you have ever wondered what kind of intense training is required to work at an arcade or similar entertainment facility then here is another video for you (well over two years ago we posted some training videos for Space Port Arcades) . Taken from a Chuck E. cheese training video circa 1991, they go through all of the details that a CEC employee needed to know at the time to make sure that the game room ran smoothly. To be honest I doubt that much has changed although I am sure that they would want to show current employees something more modern (and less cheesy, har har). I also would be curious to know if they now have to train employees on how to deal with unruly, crazy parents who are always fighting with each other.

On another note, having been a trainer for about four years in another line of work, my bosses had some cheesy ideas at time about how they thought training should go but I have to happily admit that they never used the term “entertrainment” to describe how they wanted us to train a class.

If anything one value to this video is seeing some classics in their prime, like a STUN Runner sit-down machine. Click play below to see it.

DDR fans, get ready to compete. Starting tomorrow in Dallas, TX, Konami will begin holding regional competitions at different GameWorks locations around the US, which will eventually lead to a final tournament in December where we will see who is the best DDR player in the US. If you don’t live anywhere near Dallas, don’t worry as other regional qualifiers will be held as follows: October 2 – Miami, Florida; October 11 – Columbus, Ohio; October 17 – New York, NY; October 24 – Minneapolis, Minnesota; November 7 – Las Vegas, Nevada(this will miss IAAPA by just a couple of weeks); November 14 – Seattle, Washington; December 5 – Las Vegas, Nevada (National Finals).

Players will compete on a DDR SuperNova machine, with players achieving the highest scores advancing onto the next round. I do wonder how they might use these events to also promote DDR:X, if it will be promoted at all. A few more details on the tournament can be found at the official site for the tournament, ddruschampionship.com.

"If Jimi were a pinball machine" T-Shirt

September 25, 2009

While we come across arcade-related T-shirts every now and then that are worth talking about, it’s pretty rare that we see a cool pinball t-shirt. This one comes from TeeFury.com and apparently this is only available today (Sept. 25th) and after that, no more will be made. Apparently that’s how the site works (limited edition T-shirts that are available only for 24 hrs.) so at the very least if you grab one today you will have a rare t-shirt that you won’t see very often. The premise of the shirt is “If Jimi were a pinball machine”, that Jimi being the legendary Jimi Hendrix. One nice thing about it is that they are only $9 so it won’t set you back very much to get one.

Could the future of games follow the jukebox model?

September 25, 2009

If you constantly follow the happenings of what goes on in the video game industry than looking forward into what gaming will offer in the future is something that is bound to come touchtunes_Allegroacross your mind. Obviously we thrive on new ideas and new releases to keep us going so anticipating what might be around the corner is worth considering. AH contributor and arcade industry consultant Kevin Williams has just penned an article dealing with the future of both console and arcade gaming and what direction it might go in and it has something to do with digital jukeboxes. Kevin makes a well-thought out case for such changes and with download-only services becoming increasingly popular, this is an idea that is on it’s way in some form. In case you are unfamiliar with what the jukebox model might be and how this could work out, I suggest checking out Kevin’s article, which you can read here at the Vending Times.

Rampage and Time Crisis turned into movie trailers

September 25, 2009

No this doesn’t have anything to do with Joust or Asteroids coming to the silver screen – yet anyways. But thanks to a competition that was recently put on by G4TV and the infamous movie director Uwe Boll, people had the opportunity to turn a favorite game of theirs into a movie trailer. Out of the submissions I know about so far, two popular arcade titles have been shown, which I am linking to below. Whether the makers of either of these trailers will get the chance to win the grand prize of being flown to a place where Uwe Boll will tell them that they won (they put a lot of effort into that prize, didn’t they?) remains to be seen, at least we can see the possibilities of their ideas below.

Watch this space in the future for when someone in Hollywood gets the idea that it would be awesome to attempt to make these into big summer blockbusters for all of us to groan over.

Rampage trailer. This would make for a decent parody movie of Cloverfield, which wouldn’t be hard to do these days since the only parody movies we get anymore are “‘Insert genre here’ Movie” crap.
