The touchable holography demo

I fully believe that one day holograms will play an essential role in the amusement industry – it is going to require lower costs, more convincing holograms and a practical way to apply the technology but if you watch this video below of a touchable holography demo that is being shown off at Siggraph 09 by the University of Tokyo, it’s looking like we are slowly getting there. Arcades could be excellent portals for people to start seeing and using holographic technology in gaming and we have already seen attempts at doing such a thing with games like Sega’s Time Traveller.

that is soo cool especially if you can actually feel the movement from the rain drops or a tiny animal running in the palm of your hand. when they start making arcade games with this sort of technology they should put up a price thats reasonable for each operator to buy but not quite as cheap to the main stream console buyers. were one step closer anyway.

The actual image is not really a holograph. Just like Sega’s Time Traveller, it is simply using a concave mirror to reflect an image into “real space”. A nice looking illusion.

The interesting part is t “feeling” aspect of this display. It will be interesting to see where this goes in the future.
