My arcade update 5/21 (w/video)

May 21, 2008

Sorry about the delay in updates, I have been very busy trying to get everything sorted out. Thankfully some family members have decided to take out some signature loans to help me out with a little extra cash and so I will soon be picking up Indiana Jones and Shrek Pinball thanks to that. I also will be able to pick up a few extra games beyond what I had originally planned, which is even better.

We have finished the major part of painting but now I need to touch up several parts and begin adding murals which is going to be a challenge in and of itself. Fluorescent paint is a pain to come by unless it’s spray paint and I’m no good at spray painting so I’ll probably have to buy or make some stencils and go from there.

The electrical still needs to be finished but now that we have some machines in there, it gives them something to work with as far as amps go. Crystal Castles says that it takes 3 amps at least, I’m not sure how much newer games take.

I almost forgot to mention that I have a sign up in the window that gives a basic summary of The Game Grid Arcade and it has attracted a number of people to take a look – hopefully the anticipation is building so I’ll have a solid launch. Also as of today I just ordered 5000 tokens which should be here in a few days – no custom design yet, but that will come later. I also should be picking up a number of games today, including a couple of brand new ones so I am definently excited.

A 2nd look at GTI Expo 2008 (w/ a few new games to look at)

May 21, 2008

A few posts below we ran a post on the little-known GTI Expo 2008 that took place a short time ago in Taiwan. It looks like it was a fun show but in addition to what we saw in the previous post, it looks like there were some extra goodies at the show including two new deluxe cabinets by GlobalVR for Aliens and Paradise Lost that I have never seen before. (as always, for the full sized image just click on it)

For the new deluxe Aliens cabinet it almost looks like they just added a new shell to their current deluxe model but I have not seen this configuration for Paradise Lost before (not that it would help that game out much). It could be that these models are only for Asia but we’ll keep an eye out for any of these making it elsewhere.

There are a couple of more Power Boat shots here too, including the ones we have already seen but also a slightly different blue cabinet that has some fencing around it. I’m not sure what the difference between the white and blue cabinets is but I noticed that the blue ones have fencing around them and the white ones don’t, so maybe they have different motion abilities? In taking a closer look at it, the white ones may only have the seat move where the blue ones have the seat and monitor move with it. Time will tell I guess, I wonder which one eases the motion sickness feeling.

There are a couple of drumming games here, one may be a new Percussion Master but my Chinese sucks (OK, it’s non-existent) so I’m not sure about that. One of the two has you pounding those larger drums that they always play in movies when the scene is supposed to be getting your heart racing. That would be a blast to play next to someone who is playing really hard on a different game nearby but I digress.

And to top it of with the “I’m not sure what the frak it is” category, these two games. One is obviously based on those old wooden marble balancing maze you may or may not have played as a kid (I did a couple of times so am I aging myself here?) but I have no clue what it’s called – it has a huge bowling ball sized trackball though and I’d be happy to see it come overseas. And the other one is something called ESP Agent, which looks like it might be a light-gun-esque game but I have no clue (or no frakkin’ idea – sorry I just watched a few BSG episodes the other day) what those things hanging off to the side of the cabinet are. The cords are flimsy like Wiimore Nunchuck cords but those black objects almost look like purses. Is it a game where you use ESP to discover what’s in someone’s purse? Why is it that the JErry character in the background can do an absurdly flexible high kick? I’ve seen stranger games before but I’ll stop making up stuff that it may be until I found out more. There also is a game pictured on the page called Jungle Adventure that has the same setup as one of those games where you throw balls at the screen and for some reason they have flower displays that belong at a wedding reception. It’s either a new direction in marketing coin-op games to wedding receptions or someone forgot to order the right display and they went with it anyways.

<- Make sure you cover up the game with the wedding flowers!

New game: Power Boat by IMOtion! (w/ video and 1st pics)

May 21, 2008

Today we’re doing pretty well, first the Nicktoon racing game and now Power Boat by IMOtion. Of course Power Boat is one game that we have discussed before – I saw a video of the game in action on a very tiny screen at ASI but I wasn’t able to find out much more on the game until recently. We saw the game at the GTI 2008 expo last week where it has gone under a heavy revision from what you will see here, which includes the cabinet and from what I know, the gameplay as well (they have been working on fine tuning it and making the game more fast paced. You will notice from the video that the game features power-ups and pretty good graphics, hopefully it shows through in this Vimeo video. The game has 10 different boats to choose from and courses in Russia, Greece and the Carribean Sea.

I should just reiterate again in case you didn’t want to read all of the above THIS IS AN EARLIER VERSION OF THE GAME AND THE FINAL VERSION WILL BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT. The first part shows the early gameplay (and you’ll notice the choppy framerate which I have been told should be fixed in the final version) and then shows the motion features in a prototype cabinet (that looks to have been scrapped from last weeks pics). Fortunately I may be able to see the game in action soon, when I do I’ll be sure to take plenty of video of it then. Be sure to watch it in full screen.

If that doesn’t satisfy you, a larger AVI version can be found through this link. Be warned, it’s about 175MB in size.

New from Raw Thrills: NickToons Knighttro

May 21, 2008

(Click on the image above to see it full size)

We finally have confirmation on one of Raw Thrills’ newest games – the word on the street is that this is just one of several they have in the pipe but we don’t know what they are just yet. Until then here is a new racer that includes a cart-style theme and uses licensed Nicktoons characters including Invader Zim, Spongebob Squarepants, Avatar, Jimmy Neutron, Timmy Turner and Danny Phantom. I actually would have had news on this one back at ASI but I overlooked the flyer that was there but today when I was visiting my distributor they got some in today.

As per the flyer in addition to the characters the game can link up to 6 games and 7 tracks. This game is also from the Chicago Gaming Company which has released a Nicktoons-based racer previously although I have not seen it in an arcade yet. NickToons Knighttro, while it is yet another racing game to throw it’s hat into the ring of racers on the market may find itself quite popular – in addition to some nice looking graphics (it’s hard to say really with the small pics on the flyer, we’ll have to wait to see it in action) it is also boasting quite a price tag – while a final tag is not known yet I’ve been told that it will probably be somewhere in the $4000 range, maybe more, maybe less. Either way Raw Thrills’ is getting serious about their pricing which I am happy to see, lower prices will mean that arcades can afford to buy more units to provide a better experience to their players.
