A look at Eugene Jarvis’ work, past and present

In the arcade world it’s hard to miss mega-hits like Defender, Robotron 2048, Smash TV, and Crusin’ USA and while many designers of classic arcade games have moved on toeugene_jarvis.gif different things, the designer behind the aforementioned games is still making arcade games through his own company known as Raw Thrills’. That man of course is Eugene Jarvis and from the website Newcitychicago.com we have an interesting and long interview with Mr. Jarvis that includes a good look at how he runs Raw Thrills’. I think that it’s interesting to note some similarities between the laid-back atmosphere of RT and the laid-back atmosphere of other arcade giants of the past like Atari. In addition to a look at how things go on behind the scenes at RT, they also discuss Jarvis’ outlook on how videogames have evolved over the years and where he thinks that they will go in the future. It’s always good for a hardcore gamer like myself to hear how he despises things like endless franchises of certain games from certain big game companies – from every indication we have when I talked with Betson at ASI, some of RT’s new games will be something new and fresh, which I think is something that arcades need. Anyways, hit the link below to read the full interview.

  1. Paul Says:

“…there are Jarvis’ theories on why “Pac-Man” has become perhaps the most popular video game among females. “I thought it was about eating,” he says. “You’re eating dots. This is the ultimate low-calorie eating game. You’re eating all these dots, you never put on weight… You also had that pursuit, where these bad little ghosts are pursuing you. And women, they pursue you, they try to get the guy interested, but then you eat the pill and you go eat them.” ”

Jarvis is a gaming god. For a Youtube interview with him see:

I really hope that the new line-up of RT’s games live up to his former glories. He is a cool guy though, I was hoping that he would have come to ASI
