Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade movie

June 18, 2007

Chasing Ghosts is the story of the Golden Age of gaming – a time when arcades were king and the players who mastered them revered for their skill. What happened to those players? What about the arcades themselves? Those questions and more are sure to be answered in this latest flick which covers the industry we all know and love. Chasing Ghosts was actually showcased at the Sundance Film Festival 2007 – and I almost had a chance to go see it but I missed out on it. It is now going to be shown at the LA Film Festival this weekend and hopefully will be available for home viewing not long after that.

A website is up with the trailer and as you will see from that, this covers arcade gaming at it’s finest. It also profiles several players who were (and many still are) world record holders for certain games. I especially enjoyed the part in the trailer about how the arcade was like a second home to people and how huge lines would form to play the newest games. While I missed out on the time when people lined up I did have a time when the arcade was like my second home and I have been able to get a few people to group around me while playing Star Wars Triology. The “Grouping Effect” is probably one of the collest experiences a gamer can have and I noticed they talk about that just a little bit in the trailer. Anyways, the movie does feature interviews with a few well-known individuals in the classic arcade scene including Walter Day of Twin Galaxies as well as Billy Mitchell. If you enjoy arcades on any level then you owe it to yourself to check this movie out when you can.
