Man Shows Up At Arcade With Own Set Of Skee Balls

April 25, 2007

As my first post on this blog, here’s a funny story from the satire site The Onion:

Regulars at the Fun Time arcade were surprised to see newcomer Hank Carlton open a velvet-lined case containing a set of top of the line skee balls last night. Carlton explained that his regulation-play skee balls were specially designed by Italian craftsman and have greatly improved his game.

“You see the weight and balance is far superior to what you’d see in the standard skeeball. I mean it, it’s just night and day”

Skeptical patrons were soon silenced as they watched Carlton quickly earn enough tickets to win a Blink 182 mirror.

Golden Tee Live 'Home Edition' Not So Live

April 25, 2007

I covered a while back that you could get Incredible Technology’s Golden Tee for your very own home. Well it looks like they have just released a new version, called Golden Tee Live, which I discovered at the official distributor’s of the home versions of Golden Tee. Now you would think that the fact the game’s title now has ‘Live’ in it, it would meen it is going to have online play. Well apparently it does not mean that. Shame, but at least there’s a overall upgrade that makes this worth considering a purchase. These include;

·        1 to 4 Player Game

·        27″ High Resolution Game Monitor

·        Customizable on-screen characters – choose faces, clothes, gear and gender!

·        High-performance golf equipment – Use special balls and clubs provided byTop Flite

·        Live-action commentary from golf pros Peter Jacobsen, Gary Player, Chris DiMarco, and Laura Diaz ? plus sports announcer Jim Nantz!

·        Interactive help feature by three-time National Golden Tee Champion Steven Sobe

·        Check out the all-new practice range

·        Experience seasonal changes on 10 new courses!

Also, when on this website, I discovered that they also sell a whole range of arcade games for the home including Big Buck Hunter, Silver Strike Bowling and NextCade which is a game compilation cabinet. Head over there now for even more home arcade goodness.

Out and About – Saturday Night

April 25, 2007

[In the second posting of our regular new feature] I thought it might be fun to take snaps of all the machines I come across on nights out. This is not to be confused with a venue review, but more of a ‘Can I get a focused picture of the games after I’ve  had a few beers! Feel free to send in your snaps with a few words and I’ll post it up. Who knows, it could be fun and we may even discover a few rarities on the way!

On offer at this delightful looking bowling alley was not bad considering the size, although a little dated. Virtua Striker was on offer, can’t remember which one. Suffice to say it wasn’t the forth one when they added all the tactic buttons and messed it up. There were two racers to choose from; Le Mans 24 from Sega and Atari’s Rush 2049 which are fairly decent racers, and finally there was Time Crisis 2 from Namco which I would say was the most fun machine on offer, although you can’t beat a bit of 2 player banter on Virtua Striker. Also there were some pool tables, an air hockey table and a Foosball table. Oh, and a bowling alley shockingly!

Issue 23 of HardCore Gamer Magazine out

April 25, 2007

The latest issue of Hardcore Gamer Magazine is now available and the reason I bring it up is that it features a review of Aliens: Extermination written by yours truly. I apologize for blowing my own horn here but I wanted to bring attention to the fact that this is one of the few hard copy magazines that is willing to provide space to arcade games – something that all of the self-proclaimed #1 game magazines stopped doing a long time ago as they began ignoring the industry almost entirely.

A few previews were submitted to use in this issue of the magazine but they were not used and may be used in future editions of HGM. Either way, HGM supports arcades and will continue to do so in future issues, so check it out!
