KOFXIII gets a release date

June 23, 2010

Newsfeed 841 via

King of Fighters fans mark your calendars. It has been announced that the latest installment of the game will be released on July 14, 2010. They are already scheduling tournaments in Japan for the game, I wonder how widespread imports will be to the US and Europe. Will the game manage to overcome some of the mediocre reception that KOFXII had? I’m sure that the inclusion of player favorite Mai will go a long way towards that, otherwise we’ll just have to wait and see. It will probably have a console release by the end of the year if they follow the pattern most fighters follow these days but perhaps we can hope for a decent period between the releases.

King of Fighters XIII unveiled

March 25, 2010

SNK Playmore had been teasing a preview for the latest KOF for a little while now and today was the day they finally showed the game off in Japan. Fans who missed Mai last time will be happy to know that she is back (she’s on the main page for the KOFXIII site which is where the image above came from) and the game is already confirmed to be showing up at the next Arcadia Cup Tournament in Japan. AM-Net has a number of pics but at the moment it seems that their server is being overwhelmed so you may or may not see the pics. I was able to get a couple of them which you can see below, click to enlarge. Kotaku Japan has some shaky cam footage of the preview event though if you can’t wait.

KOFXIII is scheduled for a release in arcades this summer with a console version coming in a little too quickly after that (we had heard this summer but with the arcade getting pushed back, they are either launching both at the same time or the console release will be pushed back as well). I suppose the console release can help broaden awareness of the game amongst fighter fans and bring them in for tournaments if you have a large KOF fanbase in the area but operators are not quick to forget what happened with Tekken 5 where the console release came out a couple of months after the arcade and plays on the arcade dropped badly. If you don’t have that solid arcade playing fanbase then it’s hard to warrant spending all the cash on the arcade, unless you already have a GameGate of course.

UPDATE: The AM-Net Blog has added some videos of the event! the audio isn’t great but at least you can see the game in action. Graphically the game is fluid 2D just like KOFXII.

One more UPDATE: Famitsu has a bunch of details on how the game plays, mechanics that make it different from or similar to other KOF titles.  Apparently, infinite combos are possible in the game.

KOF goes all shmup-y with KOF Sky Stage

KOF fan purists – brace yourselves. Or you might want to skip this post entirely but then again the damage is already done if you even noticed this.

For everyone else – talk about an unexpected twist in the King of Fighters series, although this is not the first time that SNK has toyed with taking the game in a different direction than what it has always been. SNK Playmore has unveiled a new KOF game that will be shown off at JAMMA next week called KOF Sky Stage. But this is not KOFXIII – it’s a whole new game that takes the franchise into the awesome land of shmups, bullet hell shmups in particular. We don’t know if it will give you 20-40 different characters to choose from (that’s unlikely) but for now we do know what it looks like and that it will be running on the Taito TypeX hardware. Stay tuned for more on this one.

The King of Fighters Character Encyclopedia

If you know anything about SNK’s King of Fighter’s series then you know that they have introduced a lot of different characters to the game over the years and unless you are a dedicated fan then it can be a little hard to follow the details on all of them, unless you pick up this nice new KOF Character Encyclopedia that is now available in Japan. I imagine that the KOF faithful wouldn’t mind picking this up either as it is sure to include some pretty slick artwork on top of all the minute details you are sure to find there (in Japanese). Then again, according to one comment on the Amazon.jp page it doesn’t fill in the details for everything that they wanted to know so until more reviews come along I wonder if it will end up really pleasing the die-hards.

KOF 2002 Unlimited Match released in Japan

In May we reported that King of Fighters 2002 was going to get it’s own upgrade similar to what SNK did for KOF98 last year and the day has already arrived where the game is available in Japan for arcades and the Playstation 2. The updated version naturally sports new graphics and sounds and while I am not sure if there are any major roster changes it has a substantial number of characters to choose from just like you had with the original game.  They also state in the press release that there are new skills and techniques to be found in this game so it will be offering a slightly different (and I imagine improved) game for fans of the original. This also uses the System Board Y2, which is a low-end piece of arcade hardware that was announced in Japan earlier this year. From the specs on the hardware it looks like the arcade version should be capable of looking slightly nicer than the PS2 version but chances are it won’t be a gigantic difference.

King of Fighters 2002 gets it's own "UM" upgrade

May 9, 2009

Back in 2007, SNK announced that they would be updating the ever popular King of Fighters ’98 using more modern technology and they released the game in ’08 with the name King of Fighters ’98 Ultimate Match.  Now SNK has decided to do the same thing for KOF2002, giving it an “Unlimted Match” upgrade that is scheduled to be released in Japan, sometime very soon. The game runs off of some new hardware that was shown at AOU 2009 known as System Board Y2 by AQ Interactive and the game has been getting a few tests in Japan already so I imagine that it won’t be long before we can import it over.

Samurai Spirits Sen and KOF98 Ultimate Match now available

August 4, 2008

Fighter fans can now rejoice – two new fighters are now available for purchase, through at least two importing companies that I know of (and probably more), Legend Trading Company (update: I just noticed that the link isn’t working although this is the one I got in the e-mail, maybe the site is down at the moment?) and Coinopexpress. The prices on both games are different between these two companies but Samurai Spirits Sen is going for $3,500 to $3,700 if you get it with the hardware (just the software runs for about $1000 less) and KOF98:UM is going for between $1300 to $2700 respectively, with the software going for much less. If you’re out of the loop, Samurai Spirits Sen is the latest entry in the Samurai Shodown series and is in 3D, KOF98:UM is KOF98 with some enhancements in graphics, new fighters and new moves and was made to celebrate KOF98′s 10th anniversary.

While many gamers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of SNK’s KOF XII, SNK is releasing another KOF game in a few weeks, the remake of KOF98, known as KOF98 Ultimate Match. An official site has been created for the game which includes a number of scree caps and a video of part of the new attract mode. While we haven’t heard about an official release of this game for markets outside Japan, Coinopexpress will be carrying the game after March 31st. Check out the site by hitting the link below.
