Cave's Akai Katana now available in Japan

August 19, 2010

(Thanks to Casey McMahon for the tip)

The new CAVE shooter Akai Katana (aka Red Sword) that was able to attract some attention from various sources on the internet is now available in Japan. There isn’t any indication yet of how many units are selling but the game is selling as a kit for about $2300USD. Where it’s a JAMMA based game that makes it pretty easy to find a cabinet for it and even though it’s not running on terribly advanced hardware, it does look like hectic fun if you can handle these kinds of games.

Videos from the Akai Katana (aka Red Sword) location test

July 25, 2010

(Thanks to ECM for the tip)

Interested in seeing CAVE’s new shooter Akai Katana? Then here are some of the first videos of the game in action, as seen recently on location test. I’m used to seeing CAVE use vertical perspectives in their games so this is a little different (like DeathSmiles) but if you are comfortable with bullet hell, then they have plenty of that to dish out in Red Sword.

CAVE tests new shmup "Red Sword" in Japan

July 17, 2010

CAVE has a new shmup they are testing in Japan, called Red Sword (or Red Katana if you want to make it sound cool).  It’s not surprising news that Cave has a new shooter coming to arcades – it’s all they do really -but strangely this has attracted some attention on some mainstream gaming blogs, despite the fact that Cave shooters stick to the Japanese market (sans console releases to platforms like XBLA) and their games aren’t terribly accessible to many players today. The attention certainly isn’t a bad thing, it’s simply good example of how useful creating a fanbase for a company can be when it comes to promoting new games in the blogosphere.

Here’s a trailer for the game that makes no sense unless you understand Japanese. No footage from the game being played yet; this site has a brief description of how the game works, it will be a horizontal shooter with selectable characters, where each character has their own unique attacks. Red Sword will be released late summer/early fall.
