Rumor: Raw Thrills' bringing 'American Idol' game to arcades

October 7, 2008

The rumor mill is churning right now but we have another rumor to look at right now in regards to what you might see in the near future from Raw Thrills’. We posted the rumor about the Guitar Hero arcade the other day and when I contacted Raw Thrill’s about it they said: “We can neither confirm or deny any rumors in relation to Guitar Hero”.

Interestingly enough we have been contacted by a source wishing to remain anonymous where they suggest that another game that Raw Thrill’s is working on has something to do with American Idol and it’s a video game. This seems to suggest that it could be something along the lines of SingStar, Lips or the microphone role in Rock Band. American Idol is certainly a popular show and for arcades to have a handle on that could be pretty big. I wouldn’t be surprised that if true, this game could also get some pretty big marketing exposure in the next season of American Idol. I do trust this source, which is why I am giving this rumor some attention.  I decided to contact Raw Thrill’s about this American Idol rumor prior to posting and they could not confirm nor deny it at this point just like Guitar Hero but it’s certainly interesting to think about. Music games have always had a strong presence in arcades thanks to bemani titles but for an American developer to throw down the gauntlet is unusual. We’ll keep you posted of course but it looks like we’ll have to wait and see about the truthfulness of these rumors. At least IAAPA is only about a month away so we’ll see how this holds up.

Rumour: London’s Funland under threat?

June 20, 2008

This one is an interesting piece of rumour, but back in January Ripley’s Believe It or Not! announced its intention to open a new museum in London’s Trocadero this August, occupying around 25,000 square feet over five levels of the building. The arcade Funland currently operates on three levels of the building itself, and it is currently unknown if Ripley’s has leased some of the space currently occupied by Funland. However, there is the possibility that Ripley’s could use the currently vacant space formerly used by the Vue cinema.

It must be stressed that nothing has been confirmed at present, and it would certainly be odd practice for the arcade to buy in expensive Sega Rally 3 cabinets if it is scheduled to close or downsize (note: the game is actually on test with a view to purchase at present). We’ll bring you more on this as we get it.

Sega’s RaceTV – your opinions

March 19, 2008

Rumor has it that Sega’s newest racer is not doing to well in arcades. We already have reported that it is expected that the game will receive an update sometime within the next few weeks but until then the game doesn’t seem to be making many waves. Personally I have not seen the game yet so I cannot give it a review at this time but I am curious to know if any of you have had a chance to play it yet and if so how the game plays. Does it deserve a bad rap or does it just need a little more time to change people’s impressions about the game?

Two More Street Fighter 4 Screens

December 7, 2007

[via Blogeek, via Arcade Renaissance]

Looks like these two screens and the information that was released by Bloggeek have got them into some trouble as thier site has been shutdown.

I’m presuming the screens are genuine, but perhaps the information that was released was not (or a certain publication may have had an exclusivity on the news). The info included the frame rate of the game, possible platforms, the style of the counter system and the possibility of online play.

So I think it’s wise not to speculate to much on this information until it is officially confirmed, so for now you can just look at the above screensshots to wet your appetite.

Update: Capcom Confirms Street Fighter 4

October 17, 2007

Another Update: Looks like Street Fighter 4 was the big news after-all. The only catch? No news on whether the arcade will see any love from Capcom or if all we can look forward to is Basara X. Then again rumors about SF4 from earlier this year says that it should be an arcade title, so we’ll keep looking forward to it.

You’ve probably heard the news already – that countdown that Capcom posted about a few days ago apparently for the remake of Bionic Commando (which was an arcade title in addition to an NES title back in the 80′s). This certainly was a surprise but it will be for game consoles and not arcades of course. At this point I have to wonder what it is they are up too with SF4 – the rumors are still there but it doesn’t take long for people to become apathetic towards rumors. Perhaps Capcom is waiting until Basara X comes out to reveal something about SF4 or perhaps there will be no SF4. And at this point seeing how much Capcom loves game consoles and how much they don’t seem to care about arcades, I have to wonder if SF4 is ever released if it will even see arcades. Maybe it will, if Tekken 6 makes a big enough of a splash but as always, only time will tell.

UPDATE: Thanks to the comment from RyanDG, my browser wasn’t showing the countdown but I see it now so I slipped up. So at 9AM PDT we should hear if it’s something SF related or not. Fingers crossed it will be…

Hacked Initial D4 cards?

August 13, 2007

[Via The Stinger Report]

It never ceases to amaze me the lengths at which some players will go to cheat at games because they aren’t good enough to get anywhere otherwise or they are too lazy to actually improve their skills to master a game. Personally I find cheating in a game boring, which stems from the time when you had God Mode in Doom. I quickly found for myself that taking the challenge out of the game didn’t make it exciting or fun. Unfortunately many other players don’t seem to find it boring at all and will go to any length to cheat to gain some sort of personal glory they can’t get based on their skills alone (this is one factor that makes many online games more frustrating than fun).

Stinger reports that Sega has been monitoring a number of unusual incidents where it appears that players have hacked the IC data cards used on their new racing title Initial D4. Players on an Initial D forum have confirmed seeing hacked cards in operation. Unless Sega discovers some way to stop this it could also mean that games such as Tekken 6 and Virtua Fighter 5 will be susceptible to similar attacks by untalented players (my own emphasis on the untalented part).

I really do hope that Sega will come up with a way to prevent this – one thing I love about arcades is that the players generally cannot modify the game itself so it’s their own skill or nothing.

Rumor: Street Fighter 4 may still be on the way

July 30, 2007

sf4arcadeheroes.jpg

Thanks to a tip from the Stinger Report, it appears that Capcom may be soon revealing a new Street Fighter arcade title. It is unknown if this would be Street Fighter 4 orsf4arch1.jpg something else but at the recent Anniversary celebration for Street Fighter at a number of Capcom arcade venues, displays have appeared with copy that alludes to a new Street Fighter arcade title. Both us and The Stinger Report are going to be wary about this until anything official is announced as rumors back in 2005 turned up with nothing once Capcom began scaling back on their arcade operations (you might recall another game which seems to have been lost in limbo, War of The Grail). So please remember that is solely a rumor until we actually see a system for it. Photos courtesy of The Stinger Report via Gamewatch.
