KOF Versus Festival previews King of Fighters XIII

May 16, 2010

Earlier this month, a large Japanese King of Fighters tournament was held, taking in classics such as KOF2002UM and KOF98. However, the big point of attraction was a special preview tournament for the upcoming King of Fighters XIII! Top players were given the chance to battle it out on the latest entry in SNK’s classic series. Check out a video of the finals below!

Power Instinct returns this summer

April 8, 2009

[Thanks to Brandon Jones for the tip!]

Here is something we overlooked from AOU 2009 – Atlus is bringing one of their classic fighters back to arcades, Power Instinct. From the video below it looks like Power Instinct with a little bit of KOFXII flare to it. The game will use the Taito Type X system and it will be released sometime this summer. See the video below and if you want to know more about Power Instinct, click here or here.

Showdown Championships fighting tournament coming in April

March 7, 2009

showdown

(Thanks to John Leigh of Anime Matsuri for sending this in)

Another big fighter tournament is headed our way, this time it’s next month in April at Anime Matsuri in Houston Texas. Known as the Showdown Championships which are in their 8th year, the organizers of this upcoming competition are promising that this will be the USA’s biggest arcade fighting tournament (which is nice to see in comparison to those who run fighting tournaments with arcade ports on consoles) and they will include the following games in the tournament:

BlazBlue
Street Fighter IV
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
SUGOI! Arcana Heart
Tekken 6 Bloodline Rebellion
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core

Various cash prizes will be given out to the top three players on each game (see details in the press release) and they even will have an SF4 cosplay tournament on the last day of the event. I like the list of games although I would have expected to see the latest Samurai Shodown title on there to fit in with the “Showdown” theme(well, I guess that particular game series isn’t a favorite for competitions).  The competition will be held at Anime Matsuri on April 10th-12th, good luck to those who participate! Hit the post break below for full details. Also visit animematsuri.com or discuss this on our forums.

BlazBlue now available for arcades in the US

November 18, 2008

bblue

While a certain company may feel that arcades are dead and so there is no use selling their fighter arcade title in the US, a different company known as Aksys has eschewed the logic of the aformentioned ‘certain company’ and released their fighter for arcades today known as BlazBlue. In case you are not familiar with it, BlazBlue is a high-definition 2.5D fighting game based upon the Guilty Gear series that had previously been available in Japan. AkSys has a website for the game available now and it should be shipping out to arcades who ordered it already.  I imagine that the price is the same as it was we first found out about it a few months ago (kit: $3500, full machine could vary between $5k-$7k depending on the model).

I think that it’s great to see another gauntlet thrown down for fighters in the US.  If Dark Presence can make it out before the end of the year, then that will mean that 3 fighting games (clarification: in an official manner) will have been made available to arcades this year alone – I wouldn’t be surprised to see more next year if the trend continues.

BTW- If you’re an operator interested in BlazBlue, I do not believe that they are going through distributors to sell the game but are doing it direct. I’m not sure how that will affect their sales overall but it will explain why you won’t see this game showing up on many distributor websites.

First look at Dark Presence’s prototype cabinet

October 5, 2008

It’s been a little while since we looked at the new and upcoming fighter Dark Presence as they have been working on putting the finishing touches on the game as well as working on their cabinet design. We have previously revealed that there will be four different designs – the one pictured here is the work-in-progress 42″ version. What you see here is lacking some final artwork around the screen and elsewhere along with a few other touch-ups. The sound system is in place (notice the subwoofer below), as is the prize door compartment (not yet completed), shocks, and USB ports (so you can save your stats to a USB drive). It also features a strong UPS inside so if the power goes out the game will be playable for a “long while” (which I can appreciate since we’ve had the power go out twice in the past three days). While the cabinet is pretty big, the cabinet is modular, breaking down into 5 different pieces so it can be moved around without much trouble. The control panel is large so that players don’t have to feel cramped as they play next to each other; the control scheme works as follows:

Right arm       Block    Right Kick
Left Arm                     Left Kick
Special

They built it to be easy for novice players but leave room for advanced players to pull off a lot of moves. On top of that the cabinet will be upgradable for their next fighting game, Conquering Light.

More about BlazBlue (US release date & price)

August 20, 2008

I had a a really good conversation with Harry at Arcsys yesterday in regards to BlazBlue and I figured that it would be worthwhile to pass some information along to you. They really are dedicated to getting the game out to as many arcades as possible like I heard and they are being quite flexible with how you cn go about it. The game will be released in the US on November 18th (which I think is close to if not the same day as the Japanese release). A kit will be available for about $3500, you can get it in a dedicated Viewlix cabinet for about $7k-$8k or they will even look into cheaper HD cabinets if you can’t afford that. The game will run in any high rez montior cabinet, such as an Atomiswave cabinet but overall Arcsys just wants Blazblue to get out there. Also, unlike that other fighter which uses the Taito Type X2 hardware, you only need one kit for 2 players, none of this garbage about forcing operators to buy two. I tip my hat to them for that!

They also will br bringing more games to the US beyond BlazBlue so expect to start hearing more about official stuff from ArcSys outside of Japan throughout next year.
