Metal Gear Coming to Arcades soon?

[Thanks to Jon Cox for the tip]

First Konami gave us Silent Hill: The Arcade and then CastleVania – could Metal Gear be the next in Konami’s line-up of console to arcade releases? It just might happen, according to information uncovered on some trademarks thanks to gaming site Kotaku. There are two trademarks that have been registered for services that include arcades/coin-operated video games, namely Metal Gear and Tactical Online Action.   Since details are sparse we can only guess as to what it is Konami is cooking up but I’d say that this is quite likely since arcade companies don’t tend to register a hoax under arcade machines. We can assume that the game will use Konami’s e-Amusement online network and I do wonder then if it might involve some sort of cross-play between arcades and consoles, say for Metal Gear Solid Online. Hopefully we should find out more very soon.

UPDATE (6/4/09): Konami announced Metal Gear Arcade at E3 and we have a newer post that includes some in-game screenshots of the game in action. Screenshots will not be able to accurately portray the game however as the cabinet will employ special 3D goggles for a 3D pop-out effect. The new post can be found here.

other game companies should follow this trend towards arcades like nintendo did with mario kart arcade gp. now if they would just bring a super smash bros arcade only game, that would certainly garner a lot of attention just like tekken 6 did and be a great multi player fighter just like konami’s the simpsons and tmnt but versing each other. it could also use collectable cards you wipe that has a character on it like a special rare metal mario or gold link from legend of zelda. way too cool to pass up.

Actually it already is a common thing – Raw Thrills with Guitar Hero, GlobalVR with Blazing Angels, Paradise Lost (Far Cry) and Madden NFL. Something like Smash Bros. would be cool – if it were different enough from the console to make heads turn. I honestly prefer more original content in arcades although there is some value in these console-to-arcade ports.

I prefer original content too but theres nothing wrong with having something come out of the home aswell like guitar hero. sega should give it another go with dinosaur king though since quite a few children know what it is now cuz of the anime cartoon thats on TV. super smash bros arcade should have cards you need to collect with a different character on each one and in order to play a certain character you need to have that character on one of your cards and insert it into the machine like on namco’s maxi tune arcade game. would think that would deffinatly work well.
