Initial D5 on location test in Japan

June 25, 2008

Yep, add another racer to the slate of arcade releases this year. Sega is now testing the latest iteration of the Initial D series, Initial D5 in arcades in Japan, reports AM-Net. Since my Japanese skills are weak I’m not sure what new features this one will carry other than better graphics so we’ll be keeping an eye on it in the meantime. At least there are a lot of exclamation points on that poster so something is exciting about it!!!

Between Initial D5, Sega Rally 3 and Hummer Extreme, which Sega racing game are you looking forward to at the moment?

New Xbox 360 Coin-Op Arcade Machine just a day away?

June 25, 2008

For a while on Highwaygames.com they have had a banner sitting there with a countdown towards an “Xbox Arcade Machine” for sometime now and according to the countdown, tomorrow is the day that it will be revealed to the world. Now whether or not it actually will come around is up for debate as I think it was a few weeks ago that the counter was almost done when it was reset and I just went to the site to take a look at it and at the moment it is at 1:15:12 – higher than the image that was sent to us by The Stinger Report. So we’ll wait and see if that happens again and if it doesn’t then we’ll have to see what Microsoft officially states about it as this is not the first time someone has tried to do this and disappeared shortly after distributors demanded to know the legality of such a machine. If it has Microsoft’s blessing then it may very well show up all over the place otherwise there won’t be much to say about it until the next company comes along trying to do the same thing.

I am curious to know what you arcade gamers think about this. Does such a system have any appeal to you or to those that you know? It could make a nice system that is a step up from store kiosks where full games are available to play as opposed to demos and I know that it would be used as an easy way to hold a Guitar Hero tournament. I also wonder if they already have distributors for the machine in the US and Europe, as the banner mentions that they are looking for distribution in Asia, the Mid East and South Pacific.

Next step in the robot take over – now they can play air hockey!

June 25, 2008

I jest with the headline about the robot takeover but if you really are concerned about the evolution of robots in the world then here’s another thing for you to worry about. If not and you love technology then it’s pretty cool and shows another step for robots on the coin-op scene – robots playing air hockey, against a human opponent nonetheless. This allows for a single player match of air hockey in a sense although I wonder how well it would really handle two players with two pucks on the board or an air hockey table with a bumper in the middle. At least the robot opponent can’t reach out with another hand to stop the puck!

ExerGaming with Expresso Fitness

June 25, 2008

We’ve discussed ExerGaming in relation to the coin-op scene before – it’s from the coin-op scene that exergaming really started to take off thanks to Dance Dance Revolution and now you will find that game in gyms or schools as another way to exercise. Now we have Expresso Fitness – it’s not the first bike riding system we have seen to do this (see the link above) and the concept was actually thought of a long time ago in the coin-op scene by Atari Games but this video shows the exercise bike riding game hybrid in action which I hadn’t seen before. All you need to do is make some sort of coin-op module and these things could easily find appeal in an arcade as well as gym and if you don’t think that exergaming could work in an arcade just look at how Nintendo has pulled off balancing on a board for the home.

GamesTM's Tekken 6 Review

June 25, 2008

[via GamesTM]

It’s always a pleasant surprise to find an arcade review in GamesTM, and this month I was…… pleasantly surprised by this Tekken 6 review. With some big name titles on the horizon, SFIV and SR3 for example, I hope to see some more arcade coverage in the next few months. Click the above picture to read the full review.

Message to GameTM – There will be Street Fighter IV at the Battle of Destiny in London  at the end of July and Sega Rally 3 is at Funland Trocadero, just in case you fancy reviewing those for your next issue.
