The Fast & The Furious Tokyo Drift Conversion Kit Officially released

April 18, 2008

At ASI it was confirmed that Raw Thrills’ would release a conversion kit for their racer Tokyo Drift and now we have the official word that the kits are now available. As we have stated before, the kits will go for a little over $2000 (price depends on the distributor but expect between $2200 and $2600) and can go into any Crusin’ USA/World/Exotica, California Speed or Off Road Challenge cabinet. I was also told that they can go into SF Rush 2049 cabinets but that is not in the press release. From what I saw at ASI, as long as the person who does the conversion does a good job at fitting everything correctly and cleaning the cabinets up properly, it can appear to the untrained eye that these are new cabinets but your results will vary from one arcade to the other obviously. Hit the post break for the full release.

Sealed Air Foam Prevents Shipping Damage

April 18, 2008

In the past, Stern used to ship pinball machines in cardboard boxes with more cardboard packed inside in an attempt to keep the machine from moving around during transit. This never worked too well, as some machines would arrive at their destinations with chips and dents.

In 2004, Stern switched from their previous method of packing, and went with a product created by Sealed Air Corp. The pieces are formed inside the Stern factory by a rapidly expanding foam sandwiched inside the silver liner which is then pressed into moulds inside wooden boxes to form the appropriate shapes to fit the machine.

Packaging World wrote an article about Stern Pinball’s packaging method used when they ship New In Box pinball machines to buyers, and talked with Stern’s Joe Blackwell about explain the company’s needs, the testing involved and the eventual solution.

A look back at Virtuality

April 18, 2008

Remember those VR arcade machines that were supposed to revolutionize the way we played games? It sure would have been great if they could have truly lived up to the promises made but honestly I think that the technology was too far ahead of its time to really work out like is needed in an arcade. I do know someone that has a couple of these units with all the software released for the platform (they did come along a little farther graphically than what you see in the video below) but I haven’t had a chance to play these yet. Here is a video from the old Gamepro TV show (remember that, back at the height of Gamepro’s popularity ?) that showcases the Virtuality units on their “Cutting Edge” segment. Vide posted by user theepicjoe.

Firefighter wins $10,000 gift card from Incredible Technologies

April 18, 2008

(Click on the image to enlarge)

Here’s a good story we received from Incredible Technologies. While it’s always great to see people winning big prizes (as the narrator on SmashTV says: “Big Money, Big Prizes, I love it!”) from arcade games, it’s even better when it’s someone whose job it is to put their life on the line to help the rest of us out, as was the case with a firefighter in Pennsylvania.

The firefighters of Engine Company 2 in Norristown Pennsylvania love their Silver Strike Bowling. They love it so much that they have a machine in their firehouse. And of course it’s an online Bowler’s Club machine, after all the guys love checking their stats and having a shot at the sweepstakes.
They say it’s a great way to kill time when they’re not out saving lives and homes.
And it earns well! Generally bringing in close to $300 every two weeks.
So you can imagine our surprise – and heartfelt joy – when Stephen Keeley, the firehouse’s 9-1-1 coordinator won March’s top sweepstakes prize: a $10,000 American Airlines gift card! Stephen’s entry was chosen at random from over 1.9 million entries.

It’s cool to hear that these firefighters have an arcade game on site there, for some reason that reminds me of the arcade games you see in the background on Ghostbusters. Anyways, congratulations to Steve!

Trials, Tribulations and Locations

April 18, 2008

So over a month ago I made a post saying that I would be getting my own arcade started that next week and that along with it I would be making regular updates but you may have noticed that I haven’t been doing that and for good reason – it hasn’t happened yet. When I made the original post I was under the impression that I would be signing the lease to my location very shortly because Sears, the landlord of the site, told my realtor to expect it to happen within 5 days (that was on about the 15th of last month). So I waited for about five days and nothing happened. I kept waiting and nothing happened. The person apparently in charge for submitting the work to the lawyers so a lease could be created hadn’t even bothered to send it to them yet and I was given no reason why, until today. Today my own realtor was able to move up somewhere in the Sears chain and get some straight answers for a change and apparently the reason why I’m still waiting is because some other business is interested in the same location and they have been given priority because they are an established business and have a lot more capital than I do. It doesn’t matter that I submitted a letter of intent back in November and because Sears’ realtor drug his feet on it because he wanted a larger cut.

So my frustration has been multiplied many times over as I have had to wait needlessly on two people who in my opinion have lacked total professionalism and competence. I have only been waiting on this site as no other properties have appeared during this time that would work out for what I need (in terms of price, space, location, and more) but now I will have to bend a bit more on what I would like as I need to open before the summer break hits.

I guess the lesson for those of you who want to open your own arcades is have a lot of capital backing you either through a large bank account, line of credit, investors, property, etc. Of course I can’t vouch for Sears either but I’m nice enough to give them the benefit of the doubt as it may have just been the combination of the realtor they picked for this particular property combined with the person in charge of the property with Sears themselves. I still don’t understand why both of them have been so secretive about their intentions and why neither has had the courage to tell us what it is that needs to be resolved to move forward.

So tomorrow I’ll be exploring the city looking for any properties that don’t show up on the online searches for whatever reasons, as will my own personal realtor (who has been great and is different from the realtor Sears has in charge of the property I’ve been trying to get into).

Konami's World Soccer Arcade Championship 2008

April 18, 2008

It has been a little while since we heard about Konami’s latest plans for a coin-op soccer title so for those eagerly awaiting a new title, they have finally revealed World Soccer Arcade Championship 2008. Set to release in Japan on the 28th of this month, the game will include the major football teams from Europe (only Italy, Spain and France are mentioned by name in an article about the game) and the game will incorporate online play with Konami’s e-Amusement Pass. Since Konami has brought their soccer titles to Europe in the past it’s likely that this will make it there too but it’s unlikely that the US will see this as we’re still lagging in soccer /futebol interest.
